AMERICAN LEGION POST 178 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Scholarship applications for graduating seniors of 2014 are now available to those members who have children attending high school at GHS as well as other schools. If you have a young relative graduating this year, and attending college next fall, they are eligible for a scholarship awarded by Post 178 as part of our ongoing community service program. You must be a current member in good standing of the American Legion Post 178, S.A.L., or the Auxiliary.

Applications may be obtained at the school and must be accompanied by a full copy of High School transcripts, and must be received at the Post by Friday, March 14, 2014.

From the Service Officer

How income affects VA eligibility. Can VA deny me health care if my income is too high? VHA rules are constantly changing. If you were denied in the past, account income too high, reapply. You can also use your own and spouse’s medical expenses to show you are below the limit. If your healthcare eligibility is based on financial need, your family’s net worth (if greater than $80,000) can prevent you from qualifying for VA health care. Go to www.1010ez.med.va.gov/sec/vha/1010ez to update or reapply. Also see American Legion magazine December 2013 issue on page 58.

Mike Rhodes, Post 178 SVO, 260-553-0558

FROM THE AUXILIARY

Gals, your 2014 dues MUST be paid by December 31, 2013 or your privileges at the post will cease. Check the list on the bulletin board at the end of the bar!

We can always use more volunteers and blood donors. Plan to help us meet our goal. January 14, 3014 is our next drive at Post 178 starting at 1pm to 5:30pm. Psi Iota Xi and Tri Kappa Sororities alternate blood drives donating the sandwiches, cookies and fruit. Their help is greatly appreciated! The Family of the American Legion has sponsored the American Red Cross Blood Drive for over 30 years.

February 1, 2014 the Auxiliary plans an all day scrapbooking event beginning at 9am lasting till 9pm. Gals, we need help donating food, prizes, kitchen help, etc. Details will be posted soon or you can see Karen Maurer, President or Rosie Newman.

The Auxiliary.

ADJUTANT MINUTE

Remember you must have your dues paid by January first or you will lose your club rights including bar, drawings, etc. Now that I am done preaching, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I would like to thank the members that have already paid their dues as it makes it easier for me. If you would like a simple way to pay your dues, you can go to the legion.org website. Go to renew and pay your dues online with a credit card. After this is done, they notify the Adjutant to send your card to your home.

Thanks,

Charlie, Adjutant Post #178

FROM DICK BOND

I would like to give a special thanks to T. Bone, Gibby, Dick Sleeper, and Kim Shumway for helping me with the Christmas dinners. Also, special thanks to Kim Evans and Lisa Wilson for perking up the Christmas tree.

COMMANDERS CORNER

My Wife and I hope all members had a safe and Happy New Year. Its 2014 and we need to hit the ground running. We will start with nomination in February, 2nd nomination in March, and 3rd nomination and election in April.

We need people to run for key positions. I know some people are getting tired and would love a break.

We had the national Commander at our post and he liked what he saw and complemented our members for there devotion to our post.

Also, a hearing aid donation box has been placed on the bar in the Canteena. Please bring your unused hearing aids to the Post and recycle the devices. They can be refurbished and put to use for those who cannot afford new devices.

Art Evans, Commander Post #178
