First production line application

Leverkusen – Triax® DP 3157 is an on-line coatable polyamide + ABS (PA+ABS) blend from LANXESS designed for the volume production of car body parts. "The mineral-reinforced material has been specifically developed for the automotive industry, which is increasingly calling for thermoplastics that can be coated on-line. Its overall properties are tailor-made for use in the car body segment – for example its high stiffness and heat resistance, its low water absorption and low thermal expansion. A leading German car maker is shortly to start volume production of a large-area body part from our material," explains Ludger Meinerding, Key Account Manager Automotive in the Styrenic Resins business unit.

Triax® DP 3157 can withstand the temperatures of up to 200°C that occur during drying after electrodeposition coating, and can therefore be coated on-line. Another advantage is its low coefficient of thermal expansion, which ensures that manufacturers' specifications of minimal gaps between adjacent subassemblies can be adhered to (zero joint look). Because of its low water absorption, the application of a coating to this blend is no problem whatsoever.

The LANXESS development team attached great importance to the material's processing properties. Its good flow characteristics, for example, make it suitable for the production of large-area parts. It can also be injection molded at temperatures of 70 – 80°C, which means that the molding tool needs only a simple water-cooling system. Due to the product's stiffness, parts can be designed with thin walls, which, in turn, means lower weight.

With Lustran® and Novodur®, the Styrenic Resins business unit is one of Europe's leading suppliers of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymers. It is also one of the largest producers of these thermoplastics worldwide. In addition, its product portfolio includes blends of polyamide (PA) and ABS, marketed under the name Triax®. Styrenic Resins also offers a wide range of customized, integrally colored ABS materials and specialties in Europe.
