How to Use This Product

Starting out

This activity can be used during Read Across America week or if you just feel like having a fun afternoon devoted to books! :) I find fifth graders get tired of Dr. Seuss activities! I go all out with this activity and send the invitations home a week early along with the "Get a Little Taste of a Great Book" sheet. Students have about a week to complete the sheet and bring it in along with their book on the day of the party. I counted this as a homework assignment for intermediate grades.

When does this fit into our schedule?
I would suggest doing it first thing in the morning or after lunch according to your schedule. My desks are arranged in groups of 4-5, so I had bright colored table cloths on all the groups. I arranged some of my personal favorite read aloud books at the front of the room to share afterwards, had classical "taste testing" music playing in the background, and an assortment of snacks and drinks for the students to have before we started. It takes me at least two hours, mainly because we eat snacks and I do my favorite read alouds afterwards and give them some time to read books from the taste testing party.

How to run the party

Once the students are in their groups, give them time to share their summaries with the people in their groups. This will give them experience talking to a small group of kiddos. Once everyone has shared, I had them rotate clockwise in their groups. They had a minute to "taste test" each book and complete their reaction. For younger kids this will obviously need to be modified. Then they continue rotating around their group/room until every book has been tried.

Purpose
The purpose of this activity is NOT to have them read the book; the purpose is to have them be exposed to a plethora of new/interesting books that their peers are reading or have read in the past. Because of this, each student should be able to complete the activity! This also gives them practice using their pre-reading strategies (reading the back of the book, cover, skim first page, etc).
What to do when the activity is finished

Once they are done rotating, they must complete their feedback sheet. Allow some students in the class to share and encourage them to find these books in the library!I take the time to allow students to stock up on more snacks and gather round for one or two of my favorite read aloud books. They then have 15-20 minutes to read to self or buddy read using either the book they brought or buddy up with someone else and read a new book they discovered during the party!
