Purpose of Job / Supporting adult service users to enter and move through integrated substance and alcohol treatment. Increasing service user opportunities to achieve sustainable treatment outcomes within Slough. As directed by the Team Leader, the Recovery Worker will be an integral member of a multi disciplinary team delivering comprehensive Tier 3 intervention services.The Recovery Worker will carry a case load and provide; medically assisted recovery,recovery planning reviews, outreach / in-reach services, semi structured groups and support through detoxification and rehabilitation.
The focus of all interventions will be:
  • To reduce substance related harm to the individual and wider community
  • To promote healthier life styles and increase service user choice
  • To promote and support individuals into both abstinence based and medically assisted forms of recovery
  • To provide effective case management and coordination of the individual’s treatment plan
  • To promote carer and service user involvement
In fulfilling these aims the post holder will use recognised evidenced based interventions and up to date validated information and will have specific responsibility for the development, delivery and coordination of a recovery focussed model.
The post-holder will contribute to the service to ensure that substance users consistently receive high quality services that adhere to the best practice guidelines and achieve high professional standards.
You will be responsible for contributing to the overall performance of the service to ensure that contractual output targets are achieved. You will also be required to record and input client data and information in order that the service operates within contractual, administrative and financial requirements.
You will be required to work flexibly across operational sites as required and within an agreed number of hours to maintain the most appropriate level of service provision. This will include evening and weekend working.
The post holder will be expected to take responsibility for personal development, identifying personal training needs and participate in regular supervision and appraisal.

Key Activities:

  • To engage with people who have substance misuse problems and provide them with advice, psychosocial and clinical interventions to address their substance misuse issues, and primary health care
  • In conjunction with medical staff to offer substitute prescribing regimes to improve social functioning and in relation to changes to client treatment.
  • To maintain a client caseload with Care Co-ordination responsibility for clients.
  • To utilise motivational interviewing, ITEP, cognitive behavioural techniques and brief interventions in both one-to-one and group settings to promote engagement in treatment services, encourage self-esteem, well-being, self-responsibility and enhanced motivation.
  • To assist and carry out appropriate screening processes including urine and saliva tests.
  • To work in partnership with community Pharmacists ensuring clear communication pathways in relation to medication and supervised consumption.
  • To titrate patients safely on to a treatment regime and ensure that procedures are constantly reviewed to promote best evidenced based practice in accordance with CRI’s clinical guidelines.
  • To carry out triage and comprehensive assessments, and to contribute to the development of individual community support plans with those who express a wish to access community treatment/support services.
  • To review on going care and treatment liaising closely with the clinical lead.
  • To develop and review care plans, provide health education especially in regard to harm minimisation, blood borne viruses and overdose prevention.
  • To promote sexual health awareness and offer screening and materials to service users.
  • To offer advice and support to clients who present for HIV and hepatitis testing, and ensure appropriate referral to specialist services.
  • To receive regular clinical supervision and maintain a current knowledge of appropriate interventions with regard to substance misusing clients.
  • To work and liaise with other agenciesinvolved with the client’s broader care plan including health services, hospitals and GP’s.
  • Recognise personal and professional boundaries and work within CRI clinical governance framework at all times.
  • Present a professional image and actively promote the service at all times to service users, other stakeholders, partnership organisations and the general public.
  • Actively participate in regular supervision and be willing to personally reflect on interpersonal dynamics within the therapeutic relationship and provide evidence of achieving performance targets alongside other supervision requirements as detailed in CRI policy.
  • Work within CRI’s professional development framework participating in active learning and developing professionally, in accordance with service and organisational requirements and current skills and abilities.
  • Uphold data protection legislation and only share client information as per CRI policy, local and formally agreed information sharing protocols and client confidentiality agreements.

Person Specification

Essential criteria:

Experience of working with substance misuse issues and a clear understanding of the need for and ability to deliver quality services.

Sound and demonstrable knowledge of clinical prescribing issues.

Knowledge of the issues facing substance mis-users including appropriate medical interventions, social care and health issues.

Ability to assess and care plan service users and formulate written reports as necessary.

Community based support practices.

Maintain professional boundaries and work effectively with partnershipagencies.

Demonstrate skills to undertake administrative duties.

Experience of contributing to project development.

Clinical auditing skills to inform evaluation of the service and identify areas for development.
