Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Technologies Overview

2 Day class

Course Description: About 1.2 million onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) in California provide wastewater treatment where centralized systems are not available. The systems are subject to the recently adopted OWTS Policy. The OWTS Policy requires Regional Boards to amend their Basin Plan, perform TMDL evaluations, and review local agency management programs (LAMPS).

This two day course will prepare staff to understand onsite technologies including: soil/site assessment, conventional OWTS, advanced OWTS, nutrient/pathogen control, effluent dispersal, OWTS operation and maintenance, and small community options for distributed and decentralized systems.

The course is intended for staff that may review LAMPs and write waste discharge requirements for facilities using onsite systems. This course may also be of interest for staff who may issue loans or grants to local agencies to comply with the OWTS Policy, develop TMDL implementation plans for impaired water bodies listed in the OWTS Policy Attachment 2, amend Regional Board Basin Plans or review Regional Board Basin Plan amendment as it pertains to incorporation of the OWTS Policy.

Additional information on the OWTS Policy and the Policy implementation is available at the OWTS Policy intranet http://wiki/owts/doku.php or the OWTS Policy public page http://www.waterboards.ca.gov/water_issues/programs/owts/index.shtml
