Environmental Science 20 –Atmospheric Systems - Climate Change Write-UpName:
ES20-AS2 Analyze current and potential future effects of global climate change on Earth and humans, including the need for adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Indicators:
- recognize how techniques such as satellite imagery, ice core samples, and dendrology are used to build climate models that predict future effects of climate changes with varying degrees of probability and reliability.
- explore, on a variety of spatial and temporal scales, major physical, biological, and social indicators of increasing global temperatures.
Part 1 – Understanding Climate Change in the Media/35
Objective:
In this assignment you are asked to do some research to better understand climate change and write a double-spaced, typed page (at minimum) – answer the questions in a long answer format. Use the resources below to help get you started (start with the Bill Nye video). If you’d like to argue against climate change you are welcome to as well – just defend your points but still cover the requirements.
Modified? You may do a page answering the questions on simply what climate change involves.
Bill Nye explains Global Warming and Climate Change
TED Talks on Climate Change
Satellite Imagery Supporting Extreme Weather Events
Ice Core Samples
Dendrology
Questions to answer in your response
- What exactly does climate change involve, what causes it and what does it mean for the environment?
- What is the evidence for climate change and global warming?
- What would be a biological (living things) indicator of global warming? What would be a physical indicator (physical changes to the environment)?
- How does Satellite Imagery help show us evidence of climate change? Provide an example of a location in the world that showed this (include the picture).
- What are ice core samples and what do they show of the predictions for the future and past of climate change?
- What is dendrology and how does it relate to climate change?
- What are some ways we can improve or reduce the effects of climate change?
Include references in the form of a bibliography in APA Format

Assessment
Information (20) / Plagiarized or incomplete. / Some questions are answered but there is some evidence that it is not in the student’s own word. / Most questions are explained and the article is in the student’s own words. / All questions are answered in the student’s own words.
Format (5) / ______/ The assignment is completed in point form. / Most questions are answered in a logical order, student has included their name but the short essay ends abruptly with no information for change. / All questions are answered in full sentences and in a logical order, includes the student’s name, and has a concluding sentence wrapping up the writers feelings on climate change and how to help stop it.
Spelling/Grammar (5) / ______/ Over 5 spelling and grammatical errors found in the assignment. / There is less than five grammatical errors in the assignments and some sentences don’t make sense. / There is at most one spelling or grammatical error found in the long answer.
Bibliography (5) / ______/ Some references are included. / References are included and are in mostly correct APA format. / All references are included and in APA format.
Part 2 – Doomsday due to Climate Change
/20
ES20-AS2 Analyze current and potential future effects of global climate change on Earth and humans, including the need for adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Indicators:
- Hypothesize how life on Earth might respond to changing global climate given different scenarios change such as sea level rise, extreme weather events, water shortages, increased spread of disease, and flooding.
Objective: Come up with a crisis for the earth related to climate change and what that would mean for the world.
Brainstorm with a partner! Get creative, yet educated!
In a three-part response to share with the class - illustrate a climate change-caused event (5), why it occurs (5), where it would likely occur (2) and how you believe humanity would respond to it (3). Provide an educated idea (using terms and information on climate change and mitigating technologies) on how we may overcome it and how we would fall victim to it (5).
Possible Scenarios –
Sea Level Rise – where? Over how long?
Extreme Weather Events (Hurricanes, Tornados) – where?
Water Shortages – where?
Increase Spread of Disease –
Flooding -
