What to Expect in __4th__ Grade
Complete and collect the items on the checklist. Bring this sheet and evidence of the work back to school next year to collect your reward for working over the summer! Due: August 17th
Reading

Read a non-fiction article or passage and write three questions and answers about it.
Read 20 minutes nightly – chart how many pages you read each time. Add it up!
Visit the Seminole County Public Library and participate in their summer reading program.
Writing and Verbal Communication
Practice keyboarding skills by using www.typingagent.com online program. Type a letter to introduce yourself to your new teacher and classmates using the correct fingers.Write a letter about one fun day during the summer using transition words and phrases. Highlight these transitions. (Do not use “then” “next” and “last”.)
Prepare and deliver a speech for your family about what you think will be the best parts of 4th grade and what scares you about going to 4th grade.
Keep a journal about what you do over summer. Use correct spelling, punctuation and spacing to write complete sentences. You should have at least 2 entries each week.
Math
Practice “Five Minute Frenzies” for multiplication on www.mathdrills.com.Complete the multiplication tables chart online at www.mathdrills.com.
Have someone test you on your facts – show evidence of your scores – using a chart or graph to track your success.
Use www.Successmaker.com math 60 minutes per week to review and maintain math skills.
Visit www.studyjams.scholastic.com to enhance addition, subtraction and multiplication skills.
Science
Utilize www.studyjams.scholastic.com to learn about the scientific method.Research and get ideas for a fun Science Expo project.
Read a variety of non-fiction books and articles about space, rocks and minerals, forces and motion, plants or animals.
Social Studies
Research interesting facts about St. Augustine. Why is it important to Florida’s history?Explain what tourism is and what specific places in Florida attract the most tourists.
Look up Florida facts. List as many state symbols as you can find. Examples: state tree, state flower, state bird, etc.
Locate where you live and places you have visited on a map.
Skills Acquired During 4th Grade:
Reading: The students will need to be able to summarize a text they have read, giving the main ideas and key details that support the main idea.
Writing and Verbal Communication: The students will need to clearly introduce, orally and in writing, a topic with facts, definitions, concrete details and examples using transition words to link ideas within categories.
Math: The students will need to be able to investigate factors and multiples in the range from 1 to 100 and determine if a whole number is prime or composite. The students will need to be able to solve multi-step problems with multiplication and division.
Science: The students will need to be able to keep records that describe observations made, carefully distinguishing actual observations from ideas and inferences about the observations.
Social Studies: The students will need to be able to explain how tourism affects Florida’s economy and growth.
Homework: Students will be expected to read at least 20 minutes a night at the appropriate Lexile level and be able to pass fiction and non-fiction AR tests to show comprehension. Math homework is given nightly. The students can expect some writing, spelling and social studies homework each week. Themed projects may be assigned throughout the year.
