The closing scene of Animal Farm features a game of cards where the pigs’ true colors are revealed when Napoleon tries to cheat the neighboring farmers. When we consider that Animal Farm is an allegory connecting literary elements to real history, the idea of the playing card can help us think about these connections.

YOUR TASK:

A Deck of Cards: As a class, create a deck of “playing cards” which show the comparison between the character/element in Animal Farm and the representative person/people/ideas from history.

Example Layout:

Like a playing card, there are “two faces.”
One face is a historical face,
the other is from the allegory.
Use color, artwork, and effort to make these cards look presentable! Include the “card” and the “suit.” Instead of the “king of spades,” this example is the “follower of sheep.”

Around the images, generate a bank of words, phrases, and statements
that describe both the character and the historical figure. / / Around the “REAL” part, give
historical facts about the character/group or event. Use your notebook.
Around the “ALLEGORICAL” part, give Quotes (with page numbers)that illustrate key facts from the novella.
