1Aim
The South African Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (SASBCP) confers the Pharmacology Educator Awardduring its annual congress meetings to a suitable educator of pharmacology (basic, clinical or translational) in recognition of contributions to excellence, expertise, and demonstrable achievement in pharmacology education.

Please Note!
No prize will be awardedif the expected high standard of excellence is not attained by any of the applicants. In rare cases the prize may be shared by two participants.
The Society retains the right not to call for applications in any particular year if a sponsor has not been secured.
3Who is eligible?
Applications for the Pharmacology Educator Award are open to individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Paid-up SASBCPmembership at the time of submission plus for the preceding year.
- Individuals working for recognised organisations/institutions in South Africa that promote pharmacology education (basic, clinical or translational) to students, or to health care professionals in training or in field/community.
This includes faculty/staff membersof a South African tertiary education institution or those working for other recognised organisations/institutions,who are either teaching pharmacology to students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, or to health care professionals or other medical-related staff in the community. - The portfolio presented should summarise ownrecent work (including the preceding year) of the applicant.
4Scope
Areas of participation may include but are not limited to the following:
- Enriching innovative programs in the classroom, school, or community
- Engaging in professional growth
- Establishing programs for other pharmacology educators
- Designing pharmacology teaching programs that focus on special populations
- Developing pharmacology initiatives for learning / educational collaboration between institutions and members of the community of pharmacology discipline
5Procedure
5.1Application documents
Application with all supporting documents needs to be submitted in PDF format via e-mail to the Society Office before or on the submission deadline set for the congress abstracts of that year. The required documents include:
- Completed and signed “Declaration Form: SASBCP Pharmacology Educator Award”.
- Completed and signed “Nomination Form: SASBCP Pharmacology Educator Award” from at least two pharmacology educators (excluding the nominee).
- Portfolio, including:
- Table of contents
- Summary of the educator’s teaching experience (250 words max)
- Abridged curriculum vitae
- Educator’s philosophy of teaching
- Examples of study materials (guides, learner assessments, links to online materials, references to prescribed text books, learner feedback, etc.) for assessment
- References to any (co-)authored publications related to pharmacology education
- Information about any other education-related achievements and contributions
5.2Nomination process
A candidate for theSASBCP Pharmacology Educator Awardmust submit a minimum of two nominations by pharmacology educators. It is possible to nominate oneself, in which case two additional nominations by pharmacology educators are still needed.
Nominations are made using the “Nomination Form: SASBCP Pharmacology Educator Award”, containing: Completed and signed Nomination Forms
- Name of nominee
- A brief statement on the nominee’s current educational activities and responsibilities, achievements and impact.
- Any additional relevant supporting nomination (optional)
5.3Judging panel
A judging panel will be appointed, consisting of international and local educators in Pharmacology. Applicants are judged according to the criteria set by the judging panel.
5.4Award Criteria
Criteria for this award correspond closely to the society’s belief that pharmacology educators play a vital role in society supporting young people’s growth and preparing them to be adaptable, flexible, creative, and responsive to future societal changes.
Criteria used in the selection process are:
- Demonstrated excellence in pharmacology education with a tangible product, process, and/or project that has had a successful impact on others.
- Evidence of commitment to the growth of young people: respecting individual needs and talents, fostering self-esteem, and encouraging realisation of individual potential.
- Evidence of outstanding personal and character attributes: setting high expectations for personal achievements and students' achievements, demonstrating leadership, and acting as a catalyst for others.
- Implementation of a creative and innovative approach that has made a difference in one's classroom and institution.
- Service as an exemplary model for students, peers, and the community
A member of the Society Executive Committee will be identified to collate the evaluations/marks. The awardee will be announced at the Gala function of the Annual Congress of the Society.
6Rules
The following rules apply:
- All participants must comply with the eligibility criteria and procedures explained in § 3above.
- In all cases it remains the responsibility of the submitting educator to confirm timely receipt of the documents for the purpose of the competition.
- All submissions shall be subject to approval by the Executive Committee of the SASBCP.
- The decision by the judging panel is final and not negotiable.
