There are a few options so play with different formats to get the right effect.

This is Inline with Text. It does the trick in some places.

This is Square. I like this one too.

Notice how the text goes right around the picture. You can and should play with the size of the picture by selecting it and pulling on the sides and corners.

This is Tight. It really all comes down to what works in a given situation. Trying different things will let you see what the best options are for your situation.

Publishing Software?

Perhaps you’re lucky enough to have some publishing software on your computer.

Microsoft Publisher has brochure templates available. There are even templates already setup for Word. These enable you to include nice borders and interesting effects.

I’ve found some of these to be cumbersome and difficult to manipulate. However, you may be able to find one that works well for you.

Have fun with it and be creative. Also, never, ever, cut your hair like this….

So You Want To Make a Brochure……

Fall 2011

Setting Up the Brochure in Word or Open Office.

The first thing you need to do is set up the layout. Go to file, page setup and choose landscape. This layout will give you more room to work horizontally and allow you to make the three required folds.

Next, in the same tab, you set the margins for the top, bottom, left and right. I used 0.5 inch margins for this brochure.

Finally, create 3 columns under the format tab. Now you’re ready to start inputting text and graphics.

Titles Should Be Prominent and Appealing

Find a way to make them stand out. A reader should be able to skim your titles to get a good idea what they’re going to learn before they delve into the text.

Colour and appropriate fonts can do a lot in terms of drawing a reader’s attention.

Don’t go overboard with it though.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Be careful. Sometimes when you take a picture like this…

….someone might change it into something like this using a computer or an online program.

I’m in trouble. He’s seriously going to kill me and he’s a big man.

Alright, here’s one of me too.

Make Good use of Space

Break up your work. Visual pauses and spaces are important and can also grab a reader’s attention. Too much text may overwhelm your reader.

Text Wrapping…

…is a great feature that allows you to integrate photos, images, and graphs without disrupting the flow of textual information.

After you insert your photo, right-click on it, choose format picture and then layout.
