Textbook: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology (online)

Course overview:

A&P is a laboratory based class concentrating on the organization, function, and integration of the human body systems. All major body systems will be covered including skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary and reproductive. In-depth dissections will be part of the curriculum.

Expectations:

  • Students should also be prepared to participate fully in all lab activities, including dissections. Students should feel free to ask any appropriate questions and contribute to class discussions. Expectations are that students will come prepared to class, including completion of reading assignments, and that personal responsibility is of utmost importance.
  • This class is an upper level science elective. All papers will be typed, printed and turned in (or submitted electronically) with points deducted for spelling and blatant grammatical errors.
  • If a student is absent, he/she is responsible for getting all make-up work and returning it within the time allotted according to the student handbook. Missed exams are to be made up before or after school, or at lunch.
  • Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. This includes all forms of cheating and plagiarism (all work not the student’s own will need to be properly cited unless the teacher directs otherwise—if a student is unaware of how to properly research and cite information, they should ask for clarification)

Required supplies:

All students are expected to have an ipad (either school or personal). If your student does not have an ipad, they must have a plan for taking notes, research, using appropriate apps, etc. A phone does not substitute for an ipad. It is recommended that each student have a binder for keeping notes, returned papers, handouts, etc. In addition, a spiral notebook or notebook paper for taking class notes, a pen or pencil, a red grading pencil are needed. Many students also like to have colored pencils and highlighters. For the dissection part of the class, students are required to provide disposable gloves and paper towels. Students will be issued safety glasses, but may provide their own. In addition, I recommend a lab coat or other protective clothing (a large T-shirt that will cover their regular clothes will work).

Grading (per district policy)

Tests/Major Projects50%

Labs30%

Daily/Quizzes 20% (quizzes may count double)

These percentages will make up 80% of the students grade, with the remaining 20% coming from the district-required final exam. Retesting shall follow district procedure and must be done before or after school (or at another agreed upon time). Students will not be allowed to retest during their regular class time. It is also expected that students will complete test corrections, additional remediation, and/or come to tutoring before attempting a retest.

Lab Safety:

Science is a lab-based class and it is of utmost importance that students become familiar with and follow all lab safety rules, lab procedures, and oral instructions. A MISD safety contract will be completed and turned in by each student before they are allowed to participate in a lab activity. Failure to turn in the safety contract will prevent a student from participating in lab.

Exams and major projects:

Students will be given adequate notice of upcoming exams and project due dates. These will be posted on the teacher webpage and in the classroom. District homework and exam policies will be followed.

Late Work: Assignments are due at the tardy bell on the due date (not 5 or 10 minutes or at the end of class). District late work policy will be followed-work may be turned in one class period late for a 30 point grade deduction. The teacher will not remind students of late work due.

Tutoring:

Tutoring will be offered before and after school according to the schedule posted on the teacher webpage and in the classroom. Students are expected to come prepared with questions about the topic on which they are requesting help.

School policies, attendance, tardies, discipline

All campus and district rules and policies will be enforced (see student handbook). Students should be respectful of school and personal property and behave in an appropriate manner at all times.

On my webpage you will find links to the Anatomy page, assignments and due dates, etc. It also links to my email, etc. There is sometimes extra credit available on the webpage.
