Job Description

Position: Public Affairs Chair

1.  Purpose: Advocate on behalf of volunteers and leadersadministrators of volunteer programs on issues of importance to promoting volunteerism and advancing the profession of volunteer administration. Study and provide information/education on public affairs issues of interest to FAVRM MAVA Members.

Accountable To: President, Board, and Membership

Term of Office: 2 years

Responsibilities:

2.  Recruit and provide leadership to Public Affairs Committee.

3.  Study and provide information/education on public affairs issues of interest to MAVA Members.

4.  Solicit information from FAVRM MAVA Members and others on timely public affairs issues impacting FAVRMMAVA Members and the volunteer community.

5.  Make recommendations to the FAVRM MAVA Board and Membership with regard to FAVRMMAVA’s platform and public affairs positions.

6.  Implement advocacy actions as indicated in the public policy platform.

7.  Develop plan for membership action to communicateion to membership when needed for rapid response.rapid response is needed.

8.  Provide rapid response on legislation and public policy issuesto the media, in public forums, and so forth, consistent with FAVRM MAVA’s Policy on Taking Public Positions.

9.  Learn about lobbying/advocacy laws, regulations and policies pertaining to FAVRMMAVA and 501(c)(3) organizations and assist FAVRMMAVA to remain in compliance through education and reminders.

10.  Implement advocacy actions as indicated in the public policy platform.Communicate with FAVRM MAVA Board ChairPresident and Executive Director for agreement on sending actions alerts, or communication with legislators and prior to representing FAVRMMAVA’s position on issues.

11.  Work with Marketing Chair to communicate and educate on policy issues and trends affecting volunteerism to elected officials, government leaders and other public leaders

12.  Develop plan for membership action to communicate the needs of the volunteer community to elected officials and other public leaders.

13.  Collaborate with other organizations across the state to achieve goals.

14.  Identify possible funding sources for FAVRMMAVA and work closely with Fundraising Development chair Chair to seek appropriate grants.

15.  Identify strategic partnership opportunities for FAVRMMAVA, especially in relationship to units of government, and work closely with Strategic Directions Committee to formalize partnerships and collaborations.

16.  Collaborate with other organizations across the state to achieve goals.

17.  Submit annual budget request.

18.  Attend all FAVRMMAVA Board meetings and prepare committee reports as necessary.

19.  Maintain accurate and complete records.

20.  Assure accurate and timely information related for FAVRMMAVA annual report, newsletter and website.

21.  Orient new Public Affairs chair Chair to position and transfer records and materials.

Skills Needed:

1.  Experience in public affairs work, grassroots organizing or advocacy

2.  Knowledge of legislative process

3.  Ability to collaborate with other organizations

4.  Excellent written and oral communications skills
