PART-TIME CHARITY SHOP MANAGER (Haverfordwest)

20 hours per week, including Saturday, flexible hours of work

Samaritans is looking to recruit a Shop Manager (part-time) for their well established shop in Haverfordwest. The shop directly supports the Samaritans branch in Haverfordwest, where volunteers take phone calls, respond to emails and text messages, and have face-to-face meetings with people who need our support. Your ability to run the shop successfully is vital to the branch.

To manage the Samaritans shop, you will need:

·  enthusiasm and commitment to maximise sales

·  good people skills to lead, manage and motivate a team of volunteers

·  excellent organisation skills.

Job specification / Main responsibilities:

Your main responsibilities are given below.

Volunteers

·  recruiting, training, managing and motivating volunteers to work in the shop

·  preparing rotas to ensure adequate volunteer cover.

Administration

·  carrying out general shop administration

·  simple financial activities, such as recording daily takings, operating the till, ensuring that all monies are properly handled and accounted for.

Shop management

·  ensuring a high level of customer service at all times, and making sure the shop is kept clean and tidy

·  making sure goods for sale are effectively and attractively displayed

·  managing the day to day operation of the shop

·  maximising sales, through for example the running of promotions and seasonal events, and maintaining attractive and themed window displays

·  managing received stock, including pricing items and sorting donations.


Controls policies and procedures

·  ensuring that all regulations and procedures relating to Trading Standards, Heath and Safety and security are understood and implemented by all volunteers.

Reporting / Line Management

·  reporting directly to the Management Committee of Haverfordwest Samaritans, and attending meetings twice a year

·  undertaking additional reasonable duties, as directed by the Management Committee of Haverfordwest Samaritans.

Personal specification / Skills required:

The following essential skills are required:

·  good standard of numeracy and literacy

·  flexible attitude

·  strong leadership and motivation skills

·  previous retail experience

·  experience of managing people / volunteers

·  good communication and organisational skills

·  ability to lift and move a range of donated goods (sometimes bulky) and carrying these down a flight of stairs to the store room

·  ability to use own initiative.

The following are desirable skills:

·  experience of working in charity sector

·  ability to speak some Welsh

Summary of main terms of employment

Full details are supplied with an offer of appointment.

Hours: 20 hours per week, at least 18 hours of which must be spent at the shop premises, between the hours of 10am-3pm, Monday to Saturday. The remaining two hours a week, if appropriate, could be spent working outside of the shop (e.g. doing shop accounts, recruiting volunteers). Hours of work can be flexible.

Holiday: Your paid annual leave entitlement will be calculated pro-rota, based on an entitlement of 185 hours annual leave and 59 hours bank holiday for full time staff working 37 hours per week for 52 weeks.

Renumeration: The salary is £16,500 per annum (pro-rota for part-time employees). Payment is made monthly in arrears by bank transfer direct into employees’ bank account.

Travel expenses: In line with Haverfordwest Samaritans’ policy, car travel on Samaritans’ business is reimbursed on a flat rate mileage allowance of 40 pence per mile. Train and bus travel are reimbursed at cost. There is no reimbursement for home to work travel which is at the employee’s cost.

Absence: If for any reason you cannot come to work you, or your representative, should notify the delegated responsible person (to be confirmed), as soon as possible on the first day of your absence. It is not acceptable to leave messages with volunteers at the shop unless in exceptional circumstances.

Sickness: Your will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) if you are eligible.

Probation Period: The first 3 months of your post will be counted as a probationary period. Haverfordwest Samaritans’ reserves the right to extend the probationary period of employment if appropriate.

Length of notice: During your probationary period, the period of notice is one week by either party. Following successful completion of your probation period, the notice period becomes four weeks in writing on either side.

References: An offer of appointment will be subject to receipt of satisfactory references.

Training: We would encourage the Shop Manager to attend the first module of the Samaritans Initial Training Programme to understand more about the work of Samaritans.
