ROCK OBITUARY PROJECT
Give your rock/mineral a name (ex: Sally Sandstone) and write an obituary about its life. In your obituary, you need to give at least 5 facts about it that we did not cover in class.
Don’t use details that you don’t understand… if you come across something weird
that you don’t understand, research it until you do!!
You should be able to answer questions about your obituary.
How you’ll be graded:
· 20 points: Be sure to answer the following questions:
o 5 pts: What type of rock is it? (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, or mineral)
o 5 pts: What subtype is it? AND creatively explain what this means!!
§ For Igneous: Intrusive or Extrusive
§ For Sedimentary: Clastic, Chemical, or Biochemical
§ For Metamorphic: Foliated or Nonfoliated
§ For Minerals: What group is it in? (Halides, Oxides, etc.)
o 5 pts: Tell me the story of his life. (How was he “born”, what kind of “job” did he have, tell about his “family”, how did he “die”, etc.)
§ Be creative with this stuff… when you find info about the uses of your rock/mineral, which could be his “job”, etc.
§ These should be integrated into the story, and this info covers your 5 facts.
§ You will lose major points here if you don’t make it into a story. I don’t want a bunch of facts written in paragraph form.
o 5 pts: Make it understandable to the reader (and yourself – don’t use facts you don’t understand).
· 10 points for the facts, (2 per fact) - make sure we didn’t cover them in class!!!!!
· 10 points for level of creativity.
o Picture and decorations are imperative.
o Make the story entertaining/interesting.
· 5 points for the bibliography. Minimum of 3 reputable sources.
o Use your textbook, the internet, or books.
§ For websites:
· give the title of the website (what’s in the top bar of the screen)
· give the author of the site, if it’s there.
· Give the date it was updated, if it’s there.
· Give the URL address.
§ For your textbook and any other books, use standard MLA format.
· Please include a bulleted list of your facts on the same page as your bibliography.

PETROVICH PUMICE
As a young, light and frothy mass of foam, Petrovich always dreamed of reaching the stars. At his first opportunity, he escaped his momma's grasp and sibling rivalry by joining the Magma Traveling Volcanic Circus. The only position open was to be shot out of the volcanic cannon. Our extroverted Petrovich enjoyed his fifteen seconds of glory. His momma, knowing, all, fed him his last meal of Russian Borsch to propel him to greater heights. In his afterlife he is abrasive to the likes of Shirley McLain.
SCHIST
Today we mourn the loss of Mr. Schist, a long time resident of Clark County, Nevada. He was immortalized in building stone at schools and local hotels. Many school children cradled him fondly as they caressed their pencils. Born 2 miles underground in an extremely warm and affectionate family, encouraging pressure bear hugs. Mr. Schist was thought by many to be flaky but developed a sparkling personality as he approached adulthood. He is survived by many brothers and sisters in local hotels.
SANDSTONE
Sandy Sandstone was part of a lofty family of mountains. Dr. Erosion was assisted by Nurse Windy Weathering at his birth. Sandy and his friends were carried along the birth canal canyons to the alluvial fan at the base of the mountain. Under intense pressure and heat from those above him, Sandy developed into a hardened, rough, individual surviving on Earth for millions of years. Dr. Jack Erosion assisted at Sandy's death. He is survived by his son, Sammy who is following in his father's footsteps.
