Psi Chi/UPO Meeting
Research Night: September 21st, 2009
The meeting was called to order at 4:01 pm.
*Several people talked about their research to the group in order to help undergraduates
get involved in research:
Becky Harris
- her research is focused on social psychology and overlaps into cognitive psychology
- sexual objectification is one of her main research areas
- looking for someone motivated and energetic
- research assistants would run participants and collect data; also, there is an opportunity to help analyze data if interested
- flexible hours
- looking for multiple people

Deanna Sandman
- working on two studies focusing on prosocial behavior, personality, and social cognition
- study 1: need someone who is good with computers or who is willing to learn
- study 2: need someone to run participants
- will involve collecting data, administrative tasks, and potentially literature searches if you are interested
- requires at least a 3-hour commitment per week, depending on how many research assistants there are
Lindsey Wylie
- involves law psychology and social psychology; overlaps into cognitive and developmental psychology
- eyewitness study
- will work with older adults and students
- need to be dependable/reliable and requires acting skills
- involves some travel with teams to the older adult participants (mainly in Lincoln)
- assistants can help with any part of the research process: data entry, data collection, poster for conferences, etc.
- gives experience of field work
- flexible hours
- applications – return to Dr. Brank’s mailbox in room 238
Chris Campbell & Elaine Martin
- good for those interested in clinical psychology
- looking for about 13-15 research assistants
- need to be dedicated; there is a lot of work
- good experience if you are looking into a clinical doctoral program
- 3 teams you can be involved with: data entry (5-6 hours/week), coding team, and observation team (go out to three locations for teacher-child interaction training)
- Reimbursed for travel (Lincoln, Ashland, Wahoo)
- Potential for posters and national conferences

- Need to be able to commit time (6 hours/week); some nights and evenings are spent training
Mike Dodd
- Studies visual perception
- Research assistants will run participants
More About Research
- Graduate school involves a lot of research, so getting involved gives you a chance to see if you like research
- The kind of research you are involved in is irrelevant; it mainly just matters that you are involved in some sort of research
- Helps you get a more well-rounded letter of recommendation
- Allows you to learn new skills, such as writing papers, conducting literature searches, data collection, SPSS, etc.
