SRI SWATHI THIRUNAL RAMA VARMA
Iam Devika Rajesh,aged 11 years studying In 6th std.Iam studying Karnatic Music with Mrs.Usha Sreenivas for the last 5 years.
Iam going to present here regarding the greatness of the Maharaja Swathi Thirunal as a Ruler & Musician in Travancore fir a period from 1829 to 1847…..
A Brief About Swathi Thirunal
Maharaja swathi thirunal was born on 16th during the year 1813,& lived for a span of 33 years 8 months. The parents of Swathi Tthirunal Changanasseri raja raja varma koithampuran was his father,and Gowri lakshmi bhai thampuratti was his mother. Swathi thirunal had two wifes-Paanapillai ayikutti narayani pillai was swathi’s first wife,then he accepted tanjavoor sugandhavalli parvathi bai as his wife.swathi thirunal had a son named Anandapadmanaban thampi.swathi thirunal belongs to the Chera Dynasty,the founder of which is believed to be author of Chilapathikaram. More close to his life time,his grand uncle, DarmaRaja-karthika thirunal was the author of Balarama Bharatham atreatise of Natya.his close relative Irayimman thampi was acomposer ,poet & kathakali exponent..irayimman thampi is surely the most musical poet of kerala and his beautiful lullaby commencing with the line “OMANA THINKALKIDAVO”has earned him an everlasting name . Omana thinkalkidavo was the most influential song in swathi’s life
Regarding his music talents
There are 106 Raga’s in which he composed his songs.Among the rare ragas are Saindhavi, kukubha, jingala, abang, sohani,deep, booshavali, desakshi, sudha bhairavi, poorvi kambhoji, manji, behag and mohana kalyani.the last two are not seen used by anyone of the carnatic composers before swathi.In behag he has composed manypiueces,& seems to have been his favourite non-conventional raga. Mohanakalyani is believed to be invented by swathi.

In kerala there is festival conducted in memory of Swathi Thirunal organized by Sree Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Sabha,Thiruvananthapuram during april every year.Navarathri Festival also organized by the Sree Padmanaba Swami Temple at Thiruvananthapuram during October-November every year on the occasion of the Paikunni festival, from the times of Swathi Thirunal.
