Through 6 new programs, Catholic Charities is helping New Orleans to address and recover from the problems brought on by Hurricane Katrina.

  • Emergency Relief Services began in order to provide direct assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina: rent, food, utilities, prescription drugs, furniture, crisis counseling, case management and miscellaneous assistance. As we move into phase II, the program will have a stronger emphasis on case management, with direct assistance as part of a holistic approach to recovery. There are 10 Emergency Relief Services locations throughout the Greater New Orleans area.
  • Project Fleur de Lis is a cooperative effort among Catholic Schools, Social Services and Health Care to reach out to students, parents and teachers in the Catholic Schools. The program helps address mental health issues related to Hurricane Katrina. Services include counseling and wrap around services. Catholic Charities is one of five partners in this collaboration.
  • Katrina Aid Today offers case management services to people affected by hurricane Katrina.KAT places a special emphasis on helping clients who are elderly, disabled, mentally ill, or otherwise economically or socially vulnerable.
  • Louisiana Family Recovery Corps assists TANF eligible single and 2-parent households who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. This program completes a Family Needs Assessment, develops a 4 month Family Recovery Plan, provides referrals, and on a very limited basis can provide emergency assistance. Due to the overwhelming request for assistance, enrollment is closed until further notice.
  • Louisiana Spirit is an outreach program designed to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. Louisiana Spirit staff delivers door-to-door crisis counseling and referral services in the seven parishes affected by Katrina.
  • Operation Helping Hands matches local and national volunteer groups with those suffering serious damage from Hurricane Katrina. The volunteers gut and clean homes of seniors and the disabled with no or very little insurance.
