Organizing Idea: Systems: Systems Through Time or Communication

Title/Subject: Moose on the Loose Encyclopedia Game

Time Frame: 30-40 minutes

Objectives: Students will listen and look for clues in the story that communicate where the moose might be and why he’s there, as well as to read clues that communicate how to find a word in an encyclopedia.

TEKS: LA1.1 The student is expected to:

(D) listen critically to interpret and evaluate.

LA1.15 The student is expected to:

(D) use alphabetical order to locate information.

Materials: The book, Moose on the Loose by John Hassett, copies of the moose to hide in the encyclopedias, and the clues cut apart in strips (see Pg 3 below).

Procedures:

Before reading Moose on the Loose:

1)  Copy pictures of the moose from the story (as many as you need for the students to work in partners).

2)  Hide the pictures of the moose inside the corresponding encyclopedias. (See the procedures below)

3)  Label the corresponding encyclopedia sets above each set of encyclopedias you have in your library.

4)  Copy the procedures below and cut into strips.

5)  Introduce the book, Moose on the Loose to the students, and explain that they will be playing a game after you read. Read the book, pointing out picture clues and text that communicate to the reader where the lost moose might be.

6)  Hand out a strip of clues to each group. Show them the encyclopedias and review alphabetical order with the students.

Evaluation: As partners find the picture of the moose on the loose inside their corresponding encyclopedia, you will know that they followed the clues correctly.
