John 5:19–29

This morning, we investigate the authority of Jesus as Messiah and as the Son of the Living God.

– in our text –

  • The Bible teaches that the Sabbath controversy was enough to cause the Jews to hate Jesus. God does not take the Sabbath off. ______

The Bible declares four individual who made themselves equal to God. 1) pagan rulers Hiram, 2) Nebuchadnezzar, 3) Pharaoh and 4) the Jewish king Joash. ______

  • John’s Gospel confirms that Jesus was not independent of the Father. That is, God the Son’s actions were not self-initiated, but were directed by God the Father. ______

  • The Word of God makes plain that the Father-Son relationship is one of continuous love. Jesus is doing the amazing will of God, while accomplishing the miraculous work of God. ______

The Relevant Question“How to recognize Jesus’ authority?”

1 – as he expresses love [v20]

  • The Father has given authority to Jesus His Son. The gospels clearly record the Father calling Jesus, “My beloved Son.” ______

  • Because God is love, Jesus perfectly reflects the love of God towards us. ______

______

  • As the Father so loved in the making and ruling of the world, so is the Son in the loving and governing the church. ______

2 – as he bestows life [v24]

  • There is a correlation between hearing and believing both are essential to receiving eternal life. The life that Jesus brings to us is resurrection life: life from death. ______

  • The gospel asserts that we have passed from death into life. That is, individuals who have eternal life will never be condemned. ______

  • Jesus was not only on a divine timetable, but He also followed a divine agenda. ______

  • We look forward to a Resurrection Day in the future, but today by responding to the voice of Jesus, we can come out of the grave we are living in right now and experience newness in Him.

3 – as he executes judgment [v27]

  • Jesus perfectly reflects the Father for the Father and Son act as one. Here, Jesus claims that He has authority to exercise judgment. ______

  • Everyone who hears Jesus and believes in God thru His name has everlasting life. ______

______

  • In v22, Jesus said, “For the Father judges no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.”
