Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved safety glasses or goggles, CSA approved steel-toed footwear, 100 % cotton coveralls preferred, and hearing protection per RETSD policy.

GENERAL NOTES: No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.

Job Safety Analysis:

1 / Inspect all personal protective equipment required for the task to be completed and replace as needed. / Make sure eye protection, footwear and clothing is appropriate for the task to be completed.
2 / Put on all required personal protective equipment.
3 / Inspect and Prepare the work area. Lock doors if working above doorways. Set up barriers or warningsigns to keep pedestrian traffic away from ladder. / Slip/Trip/Fall
Tipping / Clear walkways and work area. Make sure there is enough head room to work on the ladder. Identify and clear any potential hazards.

4 / Select the appropriate CSA approved ladder. The stepladder should reach about 1m (3ft) shorter than the highest point you need to reach. / Collapse
Electric Shock / Only use CSA approved ladders, as per RETSD policy.
Do not use metal ladders near exposed energized electrical wiring.
5 / Inspect the spreaders, steps and rails for damage or cracks. Do not use if damaged. Tag out or lock out and report to instructor. / Collapse/Tipping of Ladder if damaged / Inspect before each use.
Lock out if damaged. Damaged ladders should be destroyed to prevent further use.
6 / Transport to work area. / Strain from lifting
Trauma from dropped ladder / Use proper lifting techniques. Use a co-worker for help with long ladders.
Wear CSA approved footwear.
7 / Fully open the ladder, locking the spreaders in place. Place the step ladder close to the work area on an even, stable surface. / Tipping, Collapse of Ladder / Ensure spreaders lock properly.
Make sure ground is even and ladder is stable before climbing it.
Do not use a closed stepladder. The feet are not meant for it.
8 / When climbing:
Face the stepladder, keeping your bodycentered on the ladder, use both hands, maintain a securegrip on the rails or rungs and climb maintaining three points of contact at all times. / Fall

Falling Objects / Face the ladder.
Use three points of contact (one hand/two feet; or two hands/one foot) at all times.
Keep weight between ladder supports.
Do not climb or stand on the rear of the ladder.
Carry tools on a tool belt. Use a co-worker to hand them to you. Or raise them with a rope if needed.
9 / If possible, brace yourself with your free hand when performing a task on the ladder. / Tip/Fall / Brace yourself. Keep your balance. Do not over-reach or lean.
Do not stand on the top two steps of a step ladder.
10 / Only one worker is permitted on a ladder at a time. / Collapse/Tip/Fall
11 / When task is complete, lower tools and supplies via a rope or co-worker or tool belt. / Falling Objects / Carry tools on a tool belt, hand them to a co-worker, or lower them with a rope if needed.
Do not leave tools on top of the ladder.
12 / When climbing:
Face the stepladder, keeping your body centered on the ladder, use both hands, maintain a secure grip on the rails or rungs and climb maintaining three points of contact at all times. / Fall
Tip Over
Collapse / Do not jump, shake or “walk” the ladder.
Do not slide down the rails of the ladder.
13 / Close the ladder. Carry back to proper storage place. / Pinched fingers
Strain/Dropped Ladder / Keep fingers away from pinch points when closing the ladder.
Use proper lifting techniques. Get assistance for long ladders.
