jewelry, chewing gum, having candy, etc., in their mouths. Religious medal/Medic Alert

under uniform; bracelet may be visible. Rule infraction may result in team being penalized.

*b. Unadorned bobby pins, flat metal clips, barrettes & headbands no longer than three

(3) inches wide are legal.

3. Whenever a team receives the serve, that team must rotate. A team consists of six (6)

any team having less than six players shall be immediately penalized with a loss of rally and

the opposing team shall be awarded a point & side-out. During set, when vacant position

rotates to server position (Right Back), opposing team shall be awarded the point & side-out.

play begins by official & head coach from both teams.

d. Substitution rules for “B” & “C” squads: player-for-player; 18 substitutions per set. Teams

are NOT allowed to mix substitution methods during set. If official deems player-for-player

substitution method delays the set/used to gain an unfair advantage, official may determine

substitution method for that set.

Serving team retains the serve; the next player in the rotation shall serve for team.

4. For all squads, overhand servers may not step into the court.

7. Play starts & ends with the official’s whistle.

a. Server has five (5) seconds to serve the ball after official whistles for serve. Failure to do so

is a “fault” and results in: a loss of serve for team; side-out & point is awarded to opponent.

b. One re-serve is allowed for each player during a turn-of-service in rotation order.

c. Players may set a serve. A serve may NOT be blocked or attacked/“spiked.”

d. A net serve (legally served ball hits the top of net in between the antennas and crosses over

into the opponent’s court) is a live ball and should be played by the opposing team. A net

serve crossing net legally, but landing out-of-bounds results in side-out/point for opponent.

8. A legal contact is a touch of the ball by any part of the player’s body.

a. Multiple Contacts are permitted only: 1) when the ball rebounds from one part of player’s

body to one (or more) other body part(s), e.g., shoulder-to-arm; or 2) during one block

attempt; or 3) on a team’s first hit, whether or not the block touches the ball.

Multiple Contacts on a second or third hit is not permitted and are illegal hits.

b. Blocking/Blocking Attempts: When a player’s body part (e.g., fingers/hands) is above the

height of the net during an attempt to block opponent’s ball, and the ball “touches” a
