THE KERN FAMILY
MASSENHEIM, NASSAU (HESSEN) CHURCH RECORDS
(researched and documented by Alan Moll, September 2003)
Maria Katherine Kern was born in the village of Massenheim, in the former Duchy of Nassau. Today, it is in the State of Hessen, Germany. Massenheim is less than ten miles east of the city Wiesbaden. The Kern family emigrated to the U.S. (probably in the fall of 1851) and settled near Waterloo, Illinois. There, Katherine married Johann Schutt on 10 Feb 1852. The Schutts emigrated in the 1830s from Friedberg, which is about 30 miles north of Massenheim. It is unlikely that the two families knew each other in Germany.
HESSEN
GERMANY
I have not researched the history of the village of Massenheim or its county (Kreis Wiesbaden). This should be done to make the history of the Kern family more complete. It would be interesting to determine if this was mainly an agricultural village or a village of craftsmen, church customs, type of local government, type of serfdom imposed on the people, impact of wars and plagues, reasons for emigration, etc.
I have traced Katherine Kern’s ancestry to Georg and Maria Elisabetha Kern.

Georg Kern was a respected member of the community, for in 1709 he is listed as a Kirche Senior (church elder) and Kastenmeister (church vestryman, treasurer, churchwarden). His wife, Maria Elisabetha, reached the remarkable age of 92, having been a widow for 19 years after 47 years of marriage. Her early life was filled with sorrow. Thirteen children were born to her, but only two sons Jacob and Henrich survived childhood. However, by the time of death, she had been blessed with 21 children and 23 great-grandchildren.
Information about this Research Effort
The Massenheim church records can be found on LDS microfilms 1193493 and 1193494. I would encourage anyone interested in genealogy to order the films and view the entries for our ancestors. The baptisms, marriages, burials and confirmations begin 1706. There are a few baptism for 1703-1705, because the Pastor had failed to record them in the “old book”. Pages are missing for the baptism records from 1711 to June 1712. Prior to 1719, only the baptism date was recorded, not the date of birth. However, the early baptisms usually took place one to four days after birth. Also, early burials only record the date of the burial, not the date of death.
Church records for the surrounding villages go back to the mid-1600s or even the late 1500s, while the Massenheim records begin in 1706. There is evidence that an older set of Massenheim records once existed, but it is likely they no longer exist. However, another possibility is that the early Massenheim baptisms, marriages, and burials were recorded in the books of one of the neighboring churches, such as Delkenheim or Wallau.
Several of Katharine’s Massenheim ancestors originated from other villages. For example, Maria Katharina Rühl (#11) was probably born in the neighboring village of Wallau. My goal is to research those church records and extend the ancestral lines back further.
Since I don’t read German well, there is more information in the Massenheim church records than what I could decipher, such as occupations, causes of death, and other details about the people. Since many of the records were in very poor condition and hard to read, some entries were likely missed. However, I believe I have deciphered most of the important information regarding our ancestors.
I tried to give a complete picture of each ancestral family by listing all children. I did not thoroughly check the marriage and burial records to see if each of them married or possibly died early. I only recorded the baptismal sponsors (Godparents) that were of special interest and/or easy to read.
There are nearly 100 pages of church minutes and other records following the 1706-1739 burial section. Most of the information is for the period 1706 to 1726, with some information up to 1769. Pages 301-304 contain a list of church elders and school masters for the years 1706 to 1769. Pages 319-325 contain a list of church members in the year 1708 and the donations they made toward the purchase of an organ. All the men are listed first, followed by all the women, then the confirmed young men, and finally the confirmed young women. It would be valuable to record this entire list in order to have a complete picture of church membership. It would also help establish which ancestors were still alive and in the parish. Kern names in the list are:
Johann Jacob KernUrsula, Joh. Jacob Kern’s wife
Georg KernMaria Elisabeth, Georg Kern’s wife
Johann Henrich KernChristina, Henrich Kern’s wife
Dorothäa Kern (listed in the young women section)
If translated, these pages would likely give us a valuable insight into the lives of our ancestors 300 years ago.
