Tutoring: Anderson High School will have FIT (Flexible Instructional Time) three times a week to accommodate tutoring. The English III AP/IB teachers will work together to create tutorials, review sessions, and writing conferences. Please check your email frequently- especially on Mondays during homeroom. If you need additional tutorials, please email your teacher with a date and an time.

Grading Policy:

Grades are broken up into the following percentages:

Major Grades: 30%

Daily Grades and Quizzes: 30%

Tests: 30%

Journals: 10%

Assigned homework is to be finished before entering class on the day it is due. If a student finishes homework in class, it will be considered late.

All major assignments will be submitted on turnitin.com (details to follow later).

Philosophy of Feedback for Written Assignments:

We believe that students benefit from honoring the writing process and revising drafts. We believe that students learn how to be better writers when conferencing with peers or with their teachers. Essays and final drafts with excessive comments are often not read or discouraging. We believe students who take ownership of the writing process are empowered learners. Students will receive minimal comments on final drafts of essays, and we will rely on rubrics and writing conferences to assess written assignments. Discussion of a grade should be separate from discussion of a writer’s development.

“You’ll become a better writer, and writing will become a less painful process. When might you need feedback? You might be just beginning a paper and want to talk to someone else about your ideas. You might be midway through a draft and find that you are unsure about the direction you’ve decided to take. Essentially, asking for feedback at any stage helps you break out of the isolation of writing. When you ask for feedback, you are no longer working in a void, wondering whether or not you understand the assignment and/or are making yourself understood. By seeking feedback from others, you are taking positive, constructive steps to improve your own writing and develop as a writer.”

-The Writing Center at UNC Chapel Hill

Absences and Late Work: Per Anderson English Department policy, major compositions and projects that are turned in late will be penalized 10 points per school day they are late. After three school days, the major composition or project will earn a grade no higher than a 50. Major writing assignments may be revised to earn points back if the student schedules and documents a writing conference. Extensions on major writing assignments are allowed once per semester (details to follow).

Daily grades: 100 (on time and complete), 70 (complete but late), 50 (half or more done, but incomplete), or 0 (not done). Late daily work MUST be turned in before the last week of the six weeks.

Tardy policy: Students who are late (unexcused) will not have extra time to complete warm-ups, quizzes or any other assignment. If a student is late 3 times a semester, they will receive a phone call home. If they are late a fifth time, they will receive an office referral.

Cheating and plagiarism: You will receive a 0 and there are no exceptions made. This is in line with Anderson’s ZERO TOLERANCE policy for cheating. We will contact NHS and any coaches as well.

Make-up Work

In case of absence(s), please check the website for missing assignments and handouts before you return to class. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire the assignment and turn it in on the adjusted due date (one extra day for each day absent).
