Assistant Headteacher
All teaching posts are subject to the Conditions of Employment set out annually in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document or as determined by the Active Learning Trust and to the standards of conduct anddelivery as set out in the National Teachers Standards.
Responsible to – Executive Headteacher (Westwood & Grove Primary Schools).
Responsible for– Groups of Staff and the delivery of performance management and supervision as detailed in the Job Description or allocated by the Executive Headteacher.
Purpose of the Role
TheAssistantHeadteacherisexpectedtocontributetoastrategicoversightforboth Grove Primary and Westwood Primary School’swithintheircommunities and to analyse and plan for their future needs and further development within the local, hub and Trust wide context.
As part of the Senior Leadership team of the school(s) the AHT will work to the Executive Headteacher and as part of the SLT of both schools who together will be responsible to the Local Governing Body and the Trust for managing the school effectively and to the highest standards in leading and/or continuously developing the creation of a supportive ethos and stimulating schoolenvironment
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The post-holder will have a stimulating range of duties within this partnership of schools which will include direct classroom teaching alongside managerial responsibilities for provision of approaches and priority areas for pupil delivery across the schools.
Teaching and Classroom Delivery
Undertake direct classroom teaching responsibilities as allocated by the Executive Headteacher and which may vary in extent depending on the overall needs of the schools.
To teach to the highest standards, providing an example of ‘excellence’ as a leading classroom practitioner and inspiring and motivating otherstaff in their delivery of consistently high teaching.
To take the role of a Key Stage lead in the allocated school for teaching commitment.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Providing an example of ‘excellence’ as a leading classroom practitioner and inspiring and motivating otherstaff
Working with the Senior Leadership Team and Headteacher to sustain high expectations and excellent practice in teaching, learning and assessment throughout theschool
Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning standards of pupil’s achievement and use benchmarks and set targets forimprovement
To be involved in, actively engage with and promote professional dialogue and professional continuous professional development with other members of staff to raise pupil’s standards of achievement and to evaluatepractice
Leadership and Management
WorkingwithintheSeniorLeadershipTeam across both schoolstosustainhighexpectationsandexcellentpracticein teaching and learning throughout theschools. Working with the Senior Leadership Team to motivate, support, challenge and develop all staff to secure continual improvement
Monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and standards of pupil’s achievement and setting and monitoring targets forimprovement.Leadingarangeofpeopleinavarietyofteachingandsupportrolesin undertaking appropriate performance management and trainingdevelopment
Contributing to the process of SEF writing and production of the School ImprovementPlan and ensuring that the core skills across the schools are maintained to a highstandard
Leading and supporting key stage and subject leaders so that the curriculum is exciting and challenging and meetstheneedsandinterestsofourchildren. Plananeffectiveprogrammeofmonitoringsothat outcomes continue to improve for alllearners
Be responsible for the management and induction of new staff and overseeing teaching practice students and newly qualifiedteachers
Be responsible for either SEND or Assessment across both schools. Organising and holding meetings when required with outsideagencies
To take the lead as a Team Leader for Maths or Literacy (across both schools)
To be responsible for the provision of effective Teaching Assistant’s timetables anddeployment and to take responsibility for the professional development of groups of TAs/Cover Supervisors/HLTAs etc. delivering a regular professional development programme. In consultation with, and under the direction of the Executive Headteacher, deploy people and resources including the management of cover
To undertake performance management for allocated groups of staff and to be responsible for NQT assessments andinductions
To act as an alternate back-up Safeguarding Lead as required from time to time and in support of the schools’ child- protection and safeguarding provisions.
Playing a full part in the planning and organisation of all school activities, functions and events; including an active involvement in the extra-curricular life of theschools
Leading key stage/whole schoolassemblies
Playing an active and constructive part in our local network of schools and other partnerships, leading or attending work streams or inputting to hub-level Trust projects for school improvement asappropriate
Maintain an understanding of the school’s budget and operation of best value formoney in supporting the sound financial management of the Executive Headteacher.
These accountabilities will be delivered through the following strategies
Formulating the aims and objectives of the school in partnership with the Senior Team across both Grove and Westwood Primary schools.
Working with others to create a shared strategic vision for the two school which motivatespupils and staff and which plans for ourfuture
Establishing and implementing the policies through which both school’s aims and objectives shall be achieved
Taking a leadership involvement in enhancing standards of teaching and learning. Harnessing the enthusiasm and innovation inothers and inspiring confidence in teaching and otherstaff
Demonstrating the confidence and ability to make management and organisational decisions and ensure equity, access and entitlement tolearning are valued and preserved.
The delivery of the key duties and responsibilities set out in this job description will be driven by and delivered in support of the School Improvement plans which will identify key distinct tasks and responsibilities for the Assistant Head in the school year. These will be informed by ongoing school self-evaluation and other local/national priorities.
The Potholder’s duties must be carried out in compliance with the school’s policies and procedures including child protection, equal opportunities, Financial and Data Protection Regulations and Standing Orders, and Health and Safety legislation.
