Report to CORE from Blue Mountains Support Brigade 22/5/16

We have undertaken quite a few call-outs with the MFK to assist police for catering of tea, coffee and lunches at a number of different sites between January and now, with 2 of these happening in the last week. Hot soup was greatly received by all emergency services at the recent carry-out at Wentworth Falls. Unfortunately the patient passed away next day in hospital, but well done to our RFS crews for the hard work in the dark and cold conditions and very steep country.

CATERING OFFICER’S REPORT 7th May, 2016 Dianne Cree

Anzac Day, Monday, 26th April

Once again we provided an early morning cup of tea for the general public at the Peace Park Anzac Service held on Anzac Day at Oxford Falls. Crew Leaders Jenni Thompson and Kristine Mackie ensured that our 1,000 tasty Anzac biscuits were ready having each spent a morning with their crew baking and freezing the biscuits. Special thanks to our volunteers who were on site by 5.00 a.m.:

Joan Gourlay, Dot and Jack Last, Bev Chivers and Patty Bruniges. We held a Meeting at the kitchen prior to the event to ensure everything was ready and were pleased to assist in conjunction with Beacon Hill Brigade.

I attended a District Advisory Meeting on 12th April. Noted there were quite a few new office bearers present from brigades due to changes at the March Annual Meetings. One focus point was the forthcoming District Exercise at Elvina Bay. George Sheppard also announced that there would not be any further Hazard Reductions until September!

During April the trailer had further work carried out on its contents. An electric Birko urn was purchased which means a generator must now accompany the trailer when on location. However it is easier to access when cups of tea/coffee are required.

The high light of last month was the District Exercise which was actually held on Sunday lst May. I attended four meetings in preparation for the event, the first being Sunday, 17th April at Elvina Bay station. The decision was made not to include the distribution of snack packs or just snack pack content. However we have since found boxes of made up snack packs in the shed. Carole Hocking and her crew are attending to those in the kitchen today. Chips and muesli bars are out of date.

I would like to acknowledge the donation of a small Meat slicer from Gloria Xuereb. It will be most useful and can be found next to our large slicer.

Six black aprons have been purchased for the kitchen. We would ask that if you find your apron is dirty at the end of your roster shift then please take it home to wash, iron and return.

The major activity for the past month was the involvement of many of our members in the preparation of food for the District Exercise. I shopped and collected much of the food required on the Friday using the Catering PC. We met on Saturday 30th April at 3 p.m. and worked on food prepping until 5.30 p.m. Those who assisted me were Peter Gatien, Carole Hocking, Susan Cheney-Smith, Bernice Griffin, Barb Purnell, Jane Chandler, Warwick Oliver, Bev Chivers, Terence Hennessey and Jeff Cree. There were 50 packs of appetising sandwiches made. In addition we had two large boxes of coleslaw and green salad. Also on the day we supplied Anzac biscuits, lamingtons – with jam and cream and 200 pieces of fruit – all greatly appreciated.

On the following day we had two shifts working on the BBQ at Church Point. The first left by bus at 8.30 a.m. and replacements were brought to the Wharf area at midday. Thanks to Pip Barnes who commenced at 7 a.m. with the packing of Eskies and then Nirvana Wilson, Carol Blackwell, and Bev Chivers. Carole Hocking carried on in the kitchen. The second shift with me was Bronwen Bowden, Gloria Xuereb, Helene Do, Ernie Garzabek, and Jeff Cree. Warwick Oliver did a wonderful job as Master of the clean up on our return to base. There were last minute changes to the programme and site due to rain but fortunately that didn’t last and we did enjoy our time in the sun by the water. I would think we fed in the region of at least 130 (the sandwiches were sent out to places such as Scotland Island, Elvina Bay, and assessors on boats who saw each of the teams as they participated in the events.) Kris Mackie and her crew had previously tried a menu using kebabs etc. but at one point during the planning (before the decision for sandwiches) it looked as though we might be feeding at least 150 or more at the BBQ so that idea was dropped because it was to be 2 kebabs each. I had inspected the kitchen at Elvina Bay and there was a good sized oven which meant rissoles could be seared on both sides on a bbq and then placed in the oven to continue a gradual bake. We were to have lunch ready for contestant teams from 10.15 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. As we didn’t make it to Elvina Bay due to rain, and as we had already purchased the rissoles we continued with the original meal plan. The meal was very acceptable and with our new Birko we were even able to provide the necessary hot water for gravy.

This month will be busy each weekend including two luncheons… one for Communications and one for CORE. The dates have been included on the May Roster.

During April we served

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Report 22nd May 2016

As it is my first CORE meeting this report only covers the period since my election to Captain.

Again here I would like to record my thanks for the tremendous job John Williams has done as captain over many years and look forward to continuing to learn from him as I adjust to the new role.

Since our AGM held in April Hornsby Ku Ring Gai has prepared and issued 1275 meals at 8 hazard reductions and 148 meals at 6 training sessions.

As in the past, the Brigade assisted with serving breakfast on ANZAC day at the Hornsby RSL to approximately 3000 people.

Earlier this month Hornsby Ku Ring Gai Catering was requested to attend the Cumberland FCC to take part in a photo/video shoot with other support brigades. The aim of the shoot was to produce a video depicting what the various support brigades do within the RFS. The video should be available to all latter this year for use in promoting catering brigades and on recruitment days to give prospective recruits an idea of what we do.
