These lesson plans are designed for the TVI who would like to teach students how to use the Victor Stream. The Victor Stream is able to play books in several formats. The device is an MP3 player and can even be used to record voice memos. Older students and adults may be able to follow the step-by-step lessons independently in order to learn how to use this device. A general evaluation is provided for data collection.

Victor Reader Stream

Lesson 1: Orientation

Goal: To become familiar with physical characteristics of the Victor Stream.

In your package, you should have:

a. Victor Reader Stream with battery installed

b. Power cord

c. Carrying case

d. USB cable for connection to PC

e. Short USB cable to connect to a memory stick

f. earbuds

g. Warranty card

h. USD card (if you ordered one)

i. Documentation CD

Work Time

Without turning the Victor Stream on, help your student examine the unit. Briefly describe what is on the Victor Stream.

Front Face of the Unit:

Look at the front face of the Victor Stream. This is the panel with the numbers similar to those on a phone pad.

a. The speaker is on the left corner at the top.

b. The built-in microphone is on the right corner at the top of the front face.

c. There is a telephone keypad with a dot on the 5 key.

d. The "go to page" key is above the 1 key.

e. The "bookmark" key is above the 3 key. This key is used to mark your place in books.

f. Below the raised line is the bottom section of the front face. The play stop key is between the rewind and the fast forward triangular keys. It is rectangular in shape.

g. Above the play stop key is the sleep key. When you press this key, the sleep timer will be adjusted.

Left Side:

a. At the top of the left side is the power toggle. When the player is on, this button will toggle the volume, speed, and tone settings.

b. Next on the left side are the up and down buttons. They can adjust the speed, volume, and pitch of the speech.

Right Side of Player:

a. On the top of the right side panel is the earphone jack. You can also plug in a speaker here.

b. Next is the microphone jack.

c. Between the two rough spots is the record button.

Top Edge of Player:

a. On the left corner of the top is a mini USB connector. In this way you can access books on USB storage devices or a computer.

b. In the middle of the top panel is the SD card slot. Books and media are stored on this small card.

c. On the right is the power cord jack.

Back of Player:

a. The battery compartment is on the back of the unit. You may wish to show older students how to remove and insert the battery. During normal use, the Victor can play for 15 hours before a charge is necessary. After around 400 charges, the battery capacity will start to decrease. A full charge takes up to four hours.

c. If the unit is paused for 30 minutes, it will shut off to save the battery.

d. The serial number is on the back of the unit. You can also press key 0 on the Victor Stream to hear the serial number.

e. The USB cartridge holder is on the back of the unit. This holder is purchased as an accessory.

Victor Reader Stream

Lesson 2: Getting Started

Goal: To learn the basics of the Victor Stream.

Work Time

1. To turn on the Victor Stream, press and hold the power key. The power on-off switch is at the top of the left side panel. You will hear a beep and a welcome message when the unit is on.

2. To turn the unit off, press and hold the power key again. You do not need to turn the Victor Stream back off right now. When you do turn the unit off, it will beep twice.

3. The power button can be used to toggle between adjusting the volume, speed, and tone settings.

4. Press and release the power button to toggle among volume, speed, and pitch. Try this now.

5. When the power on-off switch says volume, you may use the up and down arrows that are located below the power button to raise or lower the volume. The same applies for speed and pitch. Explore these functions now.

6. A beep will mark the upper and lower range of each volume, speed, and pitch control.

7. For tone and speed, there is a beep to mark the middle position.

8. Settings are saved between sessions.

9. Separate settings are saved for speakers and headphones.

Victor Stream

Lesson 3: Key Describer Mode

Goal: To explore the Victor Stream while it is in Key Describer mode.

Work Time

1. Turn the Victor Stream on. Activate key describer mode.

2. If the SD card or USB source is present, press and hold the information key. The 0 key is the information key. Press and hold 0 to go into key describer mode.

3. Press a variety of keys to explore where they are located. Quiz your student to see if he or she can locate specified keys.

4. Now press and hold the information key again to exit the key describer mode.

5. If there is no USB or SD source, the unit will automatically go into the key describer mode. You can press and hold 0 to exit this mode.

Lesson 3 Quiz

While in key describer mode, quiz your student to see if he or she can locate the following keys:

Victor Reader Stream

Lesson 4: PC to the Victor Stream (Daisy Books from Bookshare)

Goals:

1. To obtain a Daisy book from Bookshare

2. To unpack a Daisy book from Bookshare

3. To transfer a Daisy book from the PC to the appropriate folder on the Victor Stream

Required Materials

1. Victor Stream

2. Long USB connector cable

3. Bookshare account

4. PC with internet access

Work Time

1. From your PC, go to the Bookshare web site.

2. Log in to Bookshare with your account e-mail address and password.

3. Locate the Daisy book that you want to download.

4. Double click the Daisy link to save the book in the Daisy format.

5. Save the book where you can find it later.

6. Exit Bookshare.

7. Locate the book to unpack.

8. Double click on the book or select it and press enter.

9. Unzip the book as directed.

10. Enter your Bookshare password and press enter.

11. Name a folder that you want to store the book files in. Save the folder where you can re-locate it when you need to.

12. Delete the "packed" copy of the book when asked to do so.

13. You do not need to open the book from the PC.

14. Close any open windows if you would like.

15. With the Victor Stream off, connect the unit to the computer with the USB cable.

16. Now turn the Victor on.

17. Close the removable disk dialog if it pops open.

18. Locate your book folder on the computer. Highlight (select) the folder. Use the mouse or arrow to the folder to select it.

19. Press control c to copy the folder to the clipboard. If you prefer, right click on the folder and click Copy.

20. Now go to My Computer. Open the Removable Disk area.

21. Open the Talking Book folder (TB). The folder name begins with a dollar sign. Do not change Victor Stream folder names. You may also look at the other folders to start becoming familiar with what they are.

22. Press control v to paste the folder into the Talking Book folder on the Victor Stream.

23. Turn the Victor Stream off.

24. Unhook the Victor Stream from the computer.

Victor Reader Stream

Lesson 5: Reading a Book

Goal: To locate and read a book on the Victor Stream.

Required Materials

1. Victor Stream

2. Daisy or other book to read that has been loaded on the unit

Work Time

1. Turn the Victor Stream on.

2. Use the 1 key to scroll through the bookshelves. Locate the Talking Books folder. The number of books located in each folder will be announced.

3. When the Talking Books folder is the focused folder, use 4 or 6 to scroll through the items along the particular bookshelf (Talkingbooks) that you are in.

4. Press the play button to select the book. Victor Stream will start reading the book. Press the play-stop button to pause the book.

5. When in the book, 4 or 6 will read back and forward by whatever level you are reading by "such as phrase, line, or word). Try this now.

6. Press 2 or 8 to toggle among the level choices. Try this now. What are the level choices in your book? Explore using 2 and 8 to move between levels and 4 and 6 to read by whatever level you have selected.

7. Use the pause-play key for continuous reading.

8. To move to another bookshelf, use the 1 key. Victor will bring you back to the place you stopped the next time you open the book.
