Fellows Weekend to Honor UK Donors

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 7, 2008) –The University of Kentucky Office of Developmentwill celebrate the continued momentum of giving by donors from across the state and country during Fellow's Weekend 2008.

During last year's Fellow's Weekend, UK announced that it had reached a major milestone in becoming one of only 31 institutions in the country to raise $1 billion as part of a capital campaign.

This year, there is even more reason to celebrate. During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, UK received $57,701,724 in gifts given by 58,338 donors, an 8 percent increase over last year’s $53,363,212 and 54,179 supporters. In addition, a total of 30,307 alumni donated $14,874,073 this year, a 7 percent increase over last year’s 28,322 who gave $14,586,846.

These increases will be celebrated during UK's Fellow's Weekend Oct. 10-11.

"Fellows represent donors who have displayed a high level of belief in and support of university programs,” said Michael Richey, associate vice president for Development. "The Fellows weekend is an effort to say thanks to a special group of alumni and friends whose gifts are making a difference in UK’s advancement."

A dinner and dance Oct. 10 will honor 261new Fellow inductees as well as 28 current Fellows who increased their level of giving within the last year. The event is held in conjunction with the Development Council Weekend, which will also include a football game, art museum tour, a tea at the Arboretum, and Big Blue Madness.

Members of the Fellows Society have contributed or committed $10,000 or more to UK. In addition, 42 members of the Fellows Society have upgraded their levels through increasing their donations.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to recognize the new UK Fellows Society members and those who have reached a new level of recognition in the Society," said Paula Pope, director of campaign services and donor relations for the UK Office of Development. "These donors have invested in the future of our students."

Since the program began in 1966, nearly7,000 donors have been named Fellows. The program honors various levels of giving: University Fellows ($10,000 or more, individuals only); Henry Stites Barker Fellows ($50,000 or more); John Bryan Bowman Fellows ($250,000 or more); James Kennedy Patterson Fellows ($500,000 or more); and Presidential Fellows ($1 million or more).
