ECO Team After School Experience

Spring 2018

Eco Team is a group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in participating in Ecology projects at Carriel Junior High. The group meets on Wednesdays throughout the school year from 3:00 to 4:00 in Mrs. Mellenthin’s class (room 714). ECO Team is a student’s opportunity to get involved and make choices that impact their school’s campus. Student interest will greatly drive the specific projects that the ECO Team will carry out this school year but typically include:

  • Maintaining our school composting program by collecting and measuring food from the cafeteria. Students will also record data about weather and activity in the worm bed.
  • Maintaining the School Butterfly Garden. Students will continue to evaluate the needs of the garden to help attract more butterflies and their caterpillars.
  • Participating in the creation of a school vegetable garden and native plants area. ECO team students take home most of the fruit and veggie products from our garden!
  • Helping set up and maintain our new school greenhouse!
  • Helping in fundraising events to support further ecology project at Carriel.

To be eligible to participate in ECO Team, students must be passing in all classes and must follow the After Class Experience Guidelines for behavior. All students are expected to demonstrate respect, responsibility, and right choices during ECO Team time. Students who wish to join ECO team for the spring semester must submita check for $35 (made out to Carriel Junior High) along with the parent permission slip to participate in the club. Students must obtain their own transportation following ECO team meetings and events within 15 minutes of the events conclusion. Students are able to bring their own snack and drink to the meetings. The first few minutes of each meeting will be for students to eat/drink and for group discussions to occur. The remaining time will be spent on action steps decided in the meeting.
