GRAPHIC DESIGN III
Catalog Description:
59 - Graphic Design III 3 units
Advanced graphic design and typography, with emphasis placed on creating and crafting package and label designs. Prerequisite: Art 56 (completed with a grade of ”C” or higher). 2hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory.

Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course the student should be able to:
1. articulate the philosophy of the graphic design processes;2. describe graphic design and typography terminology;
3. create a traditional layout of any graphic design by applying the principles of design;
4. apply a sophisticated use of typography to projects;
5. problem solve a client’s visual project needs;
6. apply color correctly, including use, choices and application;
7. describe the difference between an effective design and an ineffective design;
8. prepare printer’s specifications, selecting paper, ink and special effects;
9. describe the overall work involved in being a graphic designer;
10. describe industry related occupations;
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. articulate the philosophies and processes of advanced graphic design and
typography, as applied to package and label design;
2. create an advanced project from its conception to the final;
3. produce well-crafted, project work books;
4. use advanced typography applications and techniques;
5. create a company identity, including matching, multiple pieces;
6. apply multiple colors correctly, including use, choices and application;
7. understand the overall work involved in being a package or label designer;
8. produce professional presentations, emphasizing three dimensional crafting skills.
Course Content:
1. Advanced graphic designing and typography philosophies and processes applications,
as applied mainly to package and label designs
2. Creating an advanced project from it’s conception to the final
3. Producing project work books
4. Using advanced design trends
5. Creating a company identity, including multiple, matching pieces
6. Applying multiple colors correctly, including use, choices and application
7. Understanding the overall work involved in being a package or label designer
8. Producing professional presentations, emphasizing three dimensional crafting skills

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical assignments
a. Create an advanced graphic design by visually, problem solving a client’s project needs. Example: Wine bottle label, multiple and matching pet food labels, etc.
b. Create a company design identity. Example: Several retail store packages and labels.
c. Create written reports from reading a graphic design magazine editorials on package or label designing, and orally present the reports to the class.
