Course Information

Algebra II continues students’ study of advanced algebraic concepts including functions, polynomials, rational expressions, systems of functions and inequalities, and matrices. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems. Emphasis should be placed on practical applications and modeling. Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators and application software, should be used regularly for instruction and assessment. FROM THE TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY

Algebra II students build on the foundations from K-8 and Algebra I. Students broaden their knowledge of quadratic functions, exponential functions and systems of equations. They study logarithmic, square root, cubic, cube root, absolute value, rational functions and their related equations. Students connect functions to their inverses and to their associated equations and solutions in both mathematical and real world situations. In addition, students extend their

knowledge of data analysis and numeric and algebraic methods.

Grading Determination

Major Grades (Tests) 70% Quiz/ Daily 20% Homework 10%

Late Work Procedure

Late work will be assessed 25% off from less than 1 day up to 5 days late or later up until Panther Den for that unit begins, whichever is later. At that point Missing Assignment Academy will be assigned and, if completed, can score at most 75%. After that, it will remain a 0.

Reteach/Retest Procedure

Quiz grades that are failing will often but not always be able to be replaced with a 70% by a passing (non-retake) test grade.

Retakes are allowed on all major grades unless the grade is a 0 for academic dishonesty or refusal to take the test. Retakes need to be taken within 5 school days of the test being returned or during assigned Panther Den time.

Typically each unit will have two tests—a mostly multiple choice test followed 2-3 days later by a mostly free response test. The 2nd unit test will count as a test grade for all students; if higher than the 1st unit test, the 2nd unit test grade will also replace the 1st unit test grade and serve as a retest.

If the 2nd unit test is not passing, the student may be afforded one more reteach/retest opportunity in Panther Den provided that the student has completed all homework for that unit by the time Panther Den requests are sent out. Panther Den takes place Tuesday, Thursday, Friday—requests will be sent out the preceding Friday.

If not assigned Panther Den, a retake can also be done before/after school either before or during Panther Den week.

Student will need to be retaught material not yet mastered before a retest. This will take place in class between the 1st and 2nd unit test and in Panther Den. Tutoring is available and encouraged, before/after school, and might be required if absent during reteaching. The retake test grade replaces the original test grade if higher; the maximum grade on a retake test is 75.

Some assessments will include previous material to promote long-term learning. Sometimes these might allow an additional retake opportunity.

Student Absence Procedure

Students are allowed the same number of days that they were absent to make-up homework and tests according to the handbook. Our team will allow makeup test up to two weeks. If a test is missed, the student should make-up as soon as possible to maximize performance.

The following is the Algebra II team makeup schedule:

Tuesday afternoon 2:35 – 3:25 Room 297

Thursday morning 6:30-7:15 Room 282, 296 (alternating weeks)

If there are conflicts with these times, please contact the teacher to make other arrangements.

Test Days

Standard test days are Wednesday and Friday. Tests are allowed on other days with principal approval.

Tutoring

Below is the tutoring schedule for Alg II.

See the tutoring schedule for the Algebra II teachers on the Klein Oak webpage as well or on classroom doors.

Final Exams

Finals exams will take place the last week before winter break in December and the last week before school lets out at the end of May, start of June. There are no exemptions for the fall final, but students can earn them for the spring final. View the Klein Oak handbook to find final exam exemption information (see page 14).

If taken, the final exam counts 16% of the semester grade while each six weeks counts 28%.

Supplies for Class

Students will need to bring their tablet computer charged each day to class. Students will also need paper and writing utensil for quizzes and tests, some classroom activities, and as backup in case of computer failure.

Graphing calculators are provided in class; there are calculators on the tablet as well. Optionally, a personal calculator may be purchased.

EOC/TAKS

The only math test for grades 9-11 is the STAAR Alg I test. The STAAR Alg I test will be offered the week of Dec 7-11 for those who have not passed it. For students who have not yet passed math TAKS, the math TAKS will be given on Oct 20, 2015 and Mar 1, 2016.

Information and practice materials are available for each test on the TEA website for STAAR (EOC) and for TAKS-- and on the Klein Oak math webpage as well.
