Improving confidence with numbers up to 100.

The more of the following games and activities that can be done with others at home, the more your confidence should improve!

Out and about

During one week, look outside for ‘thirties’ numbers, such as 34 or 36. They could be on house doors, number plates, bus stops etc. How many can you find? What is the biggest one you can find? Can you take a photo of your numbers?

The next week look for different numbers, such as fifties.

Record the number and where you found it.

How much?

Once a week, count up the small change from a purse or in your piggy bank!

Shopping maths

After you have been shopping, choose 6 different items, each costing less than £1. Make a price label for each one, eg 39p, 78p. Shuffle the labels, then:

  • put them into increasing order, lowest first
  • work out what coins you would need to pay the price for each item
  • add 10p to the price of each item

Pasta subtraction

For this game you need a dice and some dried pasta or buttons.

  • Start with a 100 pieces of pasta in the middle.
  • Throw a dice. Say how many pieces of pasta will be left if you take away (subtract) that number.
  • Then take the pieces of pasta away and check if you were right!
  • Keep playing. The person to take the last piece wins!

Counting

Start at 5, then, count on from there to 11. Start at 29, count back from there to 0. Choose a different starting and ending number between 1 and 100 each time.

Speedy pairs to 10

You will need a set of number cards from 0 to 10, but with two 5s. You could use playing cards.

Shuffle the cards then time how long it takes to find all the pairs that add up to 10. Does your time get quicker the more you do it?

Maths homework review sheet

Give each activity a number to show how useful it was….
