ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:ThisFREE EVENTis open to 250 fifth graders from Fargo and surrounding communities and their teachers. Real World Camp will offer participants a first-hand look at life through five hands-on breakout sessions that resemble a stroll through the “Real World”. Participants will make financial decisions that will affect their daily lives. The free event includes materials, a t-shirt, and lunch.

CURRICULUM OPTIONS

In a change from previous years’ Real World Camps, we will be assigning your registered students to specific breakout sessions, rather than having you select the sessions your students will participate in. There will be five different breakout sessions on topics ranging from spending/saving decisions, setting financial priorities, budgeting, and so on. You will be notified of the sessions your students are assigned to by early March.

1. Mirror, Mirror – Students make choices to better understand the concept of self-knowledge, the awareness of their skills, interests, and values, as they consider education careers, and other life choices.

2. Keeping Your Balance – Students Receive Occupation Cards and observe how different jobs provide different monthly salaries. Based on these monthly salaries, students evaluate the opportunity cost of their decisions to form a budget.

3. Be A Success–Students learn how to set goals for their financial future. They play a board type game-Be A Success-in which the connection between personal finance, education and career options is demonstrated. Students will be able to identify the link between the three and apply decision making skills.

4. Savvy Shopper - Students will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using cash or credit and play a game that reinforces their understanding of the cost of credit and opportunity costs. They will also learn how to identify appropriate situations to use cash and credit.

5. Survivor Island – Students will discuss the difference between needs and wants. They will determine the role money plays in setting priorities and identify their needs in order of importance. A role play/case study in which students are considered a family that has to live on a secluded island for four months in order to win $25,000. The “family” will need to determine what they need to survive and how to spend their limited funds.

CURRICULUM TOPICS AND PRESENTERS: The curriculum used for this workshop is material provided by Junior Achievement, the American Bankers Association and other organizations. Presenters are individuals from the financial services industry – credit unions, banks, and financial counselors.
