COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is the second course in a pre-employment laboratory instructional sequence designed to provide a job specific training for entry-level employment in cosmetology careers. Students coordinate integration of academic, career, and technical knowledge and skills in this laboratory instructional sequence course designed to provide job-specific training for employment in cosmetology careers. Instruction includes sterilization and sanitation procedures, hair care, nail care, and skin care and meets the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation requirements for licensure upon passing the state examination. Analysis of career opportunities, requirements, expectations, and development of workplace skills are included.

COURSE GOALS:

Upon the completion of this course, the student shall have the basic knowledge and skills required to pass the state licensing examination set by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) and:

  1. The student investigates the employability characteristics of a successful worker in the workplace.
  2. The student combines academic skills with cosmetology requirements.
  3. The student applies the rules and regulations established by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
  4. The student describes the function and operates the tools, equipment, technologies, human resources, and materials used in cosmetology.
  5. The student integrates the academic and technical knowledge and skills for cosmetology to simulated and actual work situations.

COURSE FORMAT:

This course will be an arrangement of lectures on cosmetology theories, practical demonstrations, and student involvement. Students will exhibit their knowledge of cosmetology theory and application ability through their completion of the mandatory practical and clinical activities. Students will also demonstrate their knowledge and skills in the clinic on patrons. Supplemented instruction will be presented with guest speakers, video demonstrations, other visual aids, and field trips. Field trips may include hair-shows, off-campus classes, and SkillsUSA competitions. The course will be broken down into two modules. At the completion of each module the student will be awarded credit hours towards his/her licensing.

COURSE EVALUATION:

All grades are based on a nine weeks’ schedule with progress reporting periods every three weeks. Students can lose eligibility to attend field trips and competitions if the student is not passing during a reporting period or has an incomplete for more than ten days in any subject. At the end of each semester the student will be required to pass an end of module exam. All end of module exams must be completed with a minimum grade of 70%. To earn elective credit for high school graduation, the students must pass the currents semester with a minimum grade of 70 % as well as all required attendance. If a student is unable to maintain a passing grade and required attendance at the end of current semester, the student could be ineligible to proceed in the cosmetology program. In the event the student does not earn a grade of 70% and does not proceed the student will then receive credit for the actual hours present in class per TDLR state guidelines. A meeting will be arranged with the student’s Assistant Principal and counselor

When working in a job/career typesetting, late work is not accepted. Students are expected to complete and turn in work on time, if assignment is turned in late the maximum the student can earn is a 70 on that assignment. If a student is absent, he/she has one (1) day for each one (1) day absent to turn in the work for full credit.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are expected to attend all classes. Attendance will be recorded by the instructor and each student will review and verify their attendance with a signature at the end of every nine-week period. If a student is absent, it is up to that student to get his/her makeup work from their instructor for the day missed. The student needs to be present to receive all instructional material and information to pass each module to obtain credit hours needed toward their one thousand (1000) hours to qualify for their State Licensing exams. The student is allowed up to 9 absences per semester. If the student has excessive absences (excused or unexcused), the student can be removed from the program. A meeting will be arranged with the student’s Dean of Instruction and counselor to make schedule changes. Attendance is the key to success.

Make-up hours Policy

If the student has more than 9 absences the student will be required to make up the days missed during late lab, field trips or days appointed by the instructor. Exceeded absences must be made up by the last day of each semester. Make up hours will be recorded manually in the make-up hour logbook. The hours will be schedule for approved and signed by the Instructor. Hours will be posted and recorded to TDRL.

Withdrawal Policy

Fees associated for the Cosmetology programs are non-refundable as they are collected for the student’s kit. In the event the student’s withdrawals the student will be able to take their supplies. All hours will be posted and reported to TDLR for the time a student is present during the modules or course even if they do not complete an entire module or course. TRDL permit is a required fee in which no refund is granted
