Hogg Middle School Incoming 8th graders - Summer Reading 2015

International Baccalaureate World School – MYP

8th Grade ELA Required reading book

/ Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, Lauren Myracle. In three intertwining short stories, several high school couples experience the trials and tribulations along with the joys of romance during a Christmas Eve snowstorm in a small town.

*Choice List: All 8th graders, select one novel to read from this list.

The Juvie Three by Gordon Korman. Gecko, Arjay, and Terence, all in trouble with the law, must find a way to keep their halfway house open in order to stay out of juvenile detention.
Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings Living near the water on Maryland's Eastern Shore, thirteen-year-old Brady and his best friends J.T. and Digger become entangled in a tragedy which tests their friendship and their ideas about right and wrong.
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits--smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.
Advanced Reader: Every Day by David Levithan. Known to him/herself only as "A," the narrator of this philosophically electrifying novel wakes up every morning in the body of a different person. This constant, inexplicable change -- A is usually around the same age but has experienced different genders, ethnicities, personality types, etc. -- has made A unusually circumspect, mature, and careful not to alter anything that would impact the lives of those whose bodies s/he's inhabited...until A falls in love with a girl and breaks those rules, just to see her again. -- Description by Ellen Foreman.

Note: Descriptions from Novelist.

Free Choice: Select 3 books to read that will hold your interest and will challenge you. Listed (on the back) are a few links to award winning books.

*Assignment: Select your favorite quote from one of the novels you read and create a visual for it. On the back of your visual write one of the IB learner profiles and analyze how one of the characters exhibited the trait. BE CREATIVE! (Your ELA teacher will collect the project.)

**Celebration! We will celebrate all students who read 5 or more books over the summer! *Turn in your reading list to the Librarian to be included in the celebration
