Narrator: A journal of young Lucy Green was found and below tells the tale of this family. One we have perceived is that The Green family lives on a plantation in Georgia. Lucy’s story opens on a beautiful, hot sunny day. The family is planning to celebrate 4th of July and the Nation’s Independence. The year is 1853 and trouble is brewing between the North and The South.

Lucy: I can’t be excited even though a party is being planned. I just found out that Doe, one of our slaves Oh, I hate that word, escaped. Mother is happy about planning for the 4th of July party. Father is fuming, threatening to whip all our slaves as he paid a lot of money for him. I am so happy, for he wanted freedom in the worst way. Oh dear God, protect him.

Narrator: A few days later, Lucy’s entry:

Lucy: As more days go by, I feel that Doe is closer to freedom. The last time he tried to escape he was caught almost immediately and now it’s been a few days. I will never forget the day that he was caught and the sound of whipping. It was terrible!

Narrator: Doe is caught.

Lucy: I was woken sometime before dawn. THEY FOUND HIM! My whole family, except me, rejoiced. I remained in my bed weeping. He made it to Montpelier, Vermont which is very close to Canada. But because of that stupid fugitive slave law, he had to be returned to his “owner”- my father.

Narrator: Lucy’s journal reflects a young woman’s feelings during a very tumultuous period of time in American history. Families were torn apart, difficult choices were made… but the Union prevailed and thankfully the evils of slavery were reduced to ashes.
