APPLIQUE WITH SHERIE
Fairegarden BOM
Hand Appliqué Supply List
We will be making the Fairegarden pattern by Painted Pony’n Quilts. Gossipium will have the patterns when they know how many to order for the class.
FABRIC
-54” x 42” white with black dot print fabric – outer border
-54” x 42” black with white blocks fabric – inner border, blocks and binding
-9 – 18” x 42” black and white print fabrics – piecing triangles, rectangles and squares
-½ yd. green – outer border vines, some blocks and leaves
***I think the pattern calls for an excessive amount of the additional greens and other applique fabrics, use your own judgement. Scraps will work fine.
-Several other greens – vines and leaves
-Assorted applique fabrics or scraps for applique. Pattern included purples, yellows, blues, aquas, pinks, reds and oranges.
***** The first class we will start with blocks A & M. You will need 3 greens, 4 reds, 2 purples. Also applique thread to go with these colors.
SUPPLIES –
- Template plastic
- Freezer paper (will be used the first month)
- Karen Kay Buckley Perfect Circles (highly recommended)
- Ultra fine point permanent marker (like a Sharpie pen)
- Scissors to cut paper
- Scissors to cut fabric
- Small scissors with a fine point to snip small areas (appliqué scissors
- Appliqué needle – I prefer Tulip Applique needles (big eye or normal eye), Clover Gold Eye Appliqué needles, or Clover Black Applique needles, size 10 or 12.
- Appliqué thread – I prefer AurifilThread. This is cotton, 50/2 or 80/2. Or Mettler Machine Embroidery 60/2 thread. When matching applique thread, go for an exact match or go darker and duller. Gossipium has Aurifil 80/2 thread that will blend with many colors. Just match the values.
- Marking tools –Blue wash out pen
- Appliqué pins – short pins with a small white head
- Spray Starch, Sizing or Best Press and small paint brush
- ¼” bias tape maker
- light box
It is good to use 100% cotton, good quality fabric. You will be putting a lot of work into this and I very strongly recommend prewashing all fabrics. You don’t want any surprises later.
Watch for color fastness, especially of reds, purples and greens. In a clear glass bowl I put Dawn Ultra hand dishwashing soap and hot water. If the water remains clear, I add it to the other “ok” fabrics and wash in the washing machine (I still separate lights and darks). If color comes off in the water, continue to soak for about 24 hours, changing the hot soapy water often (except when you are asleep). If color is still continuing to bleed, consider not using the fabric. If it is then clear, go ahead and wash in machine or rinse thoroughly, dry in dryer on permanent press, and fold right out of the dryer.
