LAO recommendations for changes for accessibility and Usability

Explore Accessibility

o  Two links broken off of the resource page:

o  /Reader Management/Help/readerm.html

o  /Help/mswizard.html

Please specify the URL of the page containing the broken links.

·  The two links “resource page” and “more resources” go to the same web page.
It is what they meant.

Delete link ”more about resources” on http://www.literacyaccessonline.com/Help/index.html

·  The alt tag on explore accessibility is named “help”—that does not match the name of the link
I will fix this.

·  Skip navigation needs to be added to assistive technology link
I will fix this.

·  Alt tags needs to be added to images on assistive technology page
I will fix this.

End Session:

o  Skip navigation needs to be added to all of the second level links
I will fix this.

o  Reader reflection takes the user back to home if the user has not created a group. It is very confusing for the user.
After we introduce the “default group” this won’t happen.
But, still, if the user skipped selecting a “reader”, what do you think has to happen?

Restructuring will be done- will explain tomorrow

o  Change Reader/Facilitator Reflections and Feedback to Post-reading activities.
If we move these to post-reading,
1) Let me know specifically where you want these placed in “post-reading” page.
2) What’s going to happen on the End Session navigation bar?

Restructuring will be done- will explain tomorrow

Literacy Explorer

o  Discussion about moving End Session feedback and reflections to the activity session

o  Skip navigation is needed on the third level of Literacy Explorer (eg. Session overview, session planner, assess your reader) and the second level—“preparation”
I will fix this.

o  Under session planner, the bullets are images. WAVE specified that alt tags were needed. Any ideas of how to either change the bullets or what to label the images as??
I think we already agreed on the idea to change these to checkboxes.

Yes

o  On the Session Planner the information on the top should appear automatically, ie. Facilitator, date, and student's name.
I will fix this.

o  The Session Planner needs to have a title
You mean in addition to the title a little above the form?
You want it to be “Session Planner”? Yes

o  Assess the reader—alt tags are needed on all the images on that page
I will fix this.

o  Identify tables in session planner and preparation
What do you mean? Tables need titles

o  Post reading:

o  place alt tag on “LAO mail image
I will fix this.

o  place alt tag on the image of the notebook under the “write a letter” link
I will fix this.

o  On all of the links from the post activity pages, the image of the book is a links to “post reading activities page”. This is not consistent with the representation of the image of on all of the other pages
That’s the way the previous team provided a way to get back to the main navigation structure. How do you want it to be changed? Team will be looking at this together-we will get back to you later

o  the first image on “write a post card” needs an alt tag
I will fix this.

o  Red text can NOT be read by people who are color blind—change the color on the following pages:

§  the vowels page

§  Beginning and ending sounds

§  Homonyms, verbs, adjectives

§  Sequence Chain

§  ABC order

§  Compare and contrast

You are going to work on these pages yourself, right? yes
After you’re done, send me the files.

o  Skip navigation to “next” & “back” button on the bottom of the story pages
I didn’t get this.

We discussed that “Next” and “Back” will be before numbered pages –we will be sending you a wireframe of how we would like it to look

o  Drop down box for story pages instead of the current list which goes across the page
Is this the final decision?
I think we decided to change this page navigation differently in our discussion with Mike.

We will discuss this with Mike and the team and get back to you later

o  Some but not all pages read the top prompt menu
What do you mean? Reading Strategy Icons on the top of the stories are not all read. As a team , we will decide if we want it read with a screen reader or have a skip nav.

For Reading Partners

o  On the link “reader management”, the alt tag says “student management”. The alt tag does not match the title of the link.’
I will fix this.

Home

o  Sitemap is an image, so a visually impaired person would have trouble reading the map. The image should be changed to a regular HTML document
You’re going to get rid of this old sitemap, right? Yes!

o  Change system so when user goes into system, they have the option of picking a group but if they have a group, it will default to “individual”
I will make this change.

o  Drop down menu’s need to be readable through screen reader
It’s already been taken care of, right? ok

General comments:

Provide navigation links at the bottom of each page (only the main navigation links)

Please design a sample page on an existing page and deliver it to me. Ok, will do

Place alt tags on all of the green “move on” buttons

I will fix this.

Besides, if you can create a better button to replace the existing one, it will be great.
(You know, I made the current one from a button on the GMU site.) We agree! We do

Identify headers in all of the tables

When a table is used only for the layout purpose, what kind of headers is needed and/or appropriate? Identify header- not sure, we will look into what it means

The picture of the boy that appears on each page does not have an alt tag

Because, as for not, the guy doesn’t convey anything. No need for that.
(Neither a link, nor a separate image.) We will address the boy later during restructuring

Look into moving communication section onto the same server

I talked to Shuangbao and I found that, as I suspected, it was not true that the Web BBS was updated to a commercial version. The current BBS is simply a slight revision from the previous one.

Also, we talked about the issue of moving the BBS part to our own server; he said that it’s not that a big task but he’s very busy for his project at least until the date of the final presentation. What do you think? Would you be able to move it?

Specify who the experts are in the communication section

Did we have a chance to address this issue? I need to know who’s who. No, will talk to Mike about this later

Change to correct pronunciation of LAO and McFeeglebee

I will fix this. (All the LAO to LiteracyAccess Online)

Seunghun will make the little boy the HELP button and write HELP on the book and incorporate necessary alt tags as appropriate

Right. But, after the (Site) Help system is created.

Discussion Board #1 Priority - Seunghun will check with Jonathan Crook and Shaungbao

External links should open to a new window

I will fix this.

Pages with anchors should have links to the top of the page after every anchor

Could you give me a list of specific pages? As we go through the site, we will fix the html page that need anchors, if any asp pages need fixing, we will tell you.

All Dropdown menus should be accessible combination boxes

Already addressed, right? ok

3/26/02

o  Site Map needs to be changed into a Site Help

o  On the Session Planner the information on the top should appear automatically, ie. Facilitator, date, and student’s name.

o  On the following pages we will change the color of the text: (if the text is red)

§  the vowels page

§  Beginning and ending sounds

§  Homonyms, verbs, adjectives

§  Sequence Chain

§  ABC order

§  Compare and contrast

§  Session planner

o  The Session Planner needs to have a title

o  In the Story, the “Next” and “Back” buttons should be placed together before the numbered pages
Please design a prototype page on an existing page for me.

o  The LAO team will identify for Seunghun where LAO is not spelled out.

o  LAO team will revisit the McFeeglebee’s Pond story on WAVE.
