You are cordially invited to attend the 44th GCG AGM at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7, Ireland on Tuesday 14th November 2017, at 4pm.

The theme of the associated seminar will be:

'Making the most of a move'

The full programme will start around 10.20am, with the AGM at around 4pm.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Matthew Parkes – revealing long hidden gems -Ireland’s geology collections
  • Nigel Monaghan – Moving Dublin’s Natural History Museum collections
  • Rachel Walcott – National Museum of Scotland rocks redisplayed and reorganised
  • Hannah Allum – Oxford University Museum of Natural History moves
  • Emma-Louise Nicholls – Horniman Museum moves – coping with short notice
  • Mike Howe – British Geological Survey moving a Core Store to Keyworth
  • Simon Harris –tackling asbestos in the collections of the British Geological Survey
  • Paolo Viscardi – pest management for moving collections
  • Sandra Chapman – compactor storage for vertebrate collections at the NHM

The AGM of the Geological Curators’ Group will be at 4pm on Tuesday 14th November followed by a drinks reception and posters. For those who wish to, we will meet afterwards for a meal and drinks at a nearby restaurant pub.

On Wednesday 15th November there will be visits to:

  • the newly illuminated Natural History Museum, before public opening
  • the recently rehomed Geology Museum of Trinity College Dublin, hosted by Patrick Wyse Jackson who will discuss the practicalities of his move
  • the National Museum of Ireland’s Collections Resource Centre at Swords, including a full behind the scenes tour, practical demonstrations, a range of short discussion workshops covering themes such as pest management, freezing, manual handling, documentation procedures, removal firms, packing materials, machinery and tools, and other concerns for curators

Registration fees will be as follows:

  • Tuesday seminar talks and AGM (rate for GCG members)£35
  • Tuesday seminar and AGM (rate for non-members)£45

You can join GCG for just £20 per year –

  • Wednesday seminar visits and tour with practical demos(members)£20
  • Wednesday seminar tour with practical demos(non-members)£30

Refreshments and a lunch will be provided during the seminar on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening, we have arranged a venue to meet where delegates are welcome to buy their own meal and drink. Lunch and refreshments are included on Wednesday, as is the coach travel between sites. Participants will be able to bring luggage and get dropped at Dublin airport in the afternoon if they wish, or travel back to the city centre. We would aim to get people to the Airport for 4pm, but please enquire if your flight timings provide difficulty as we may be able to cater for you.
