End of Year AP Statistics Projects

The Statistics Olympics

We will hold the Statistics Olympics in the cafeteria during A1/B1 on Tuesday, May 13. It is essential that you come to class fully prepared to run your event. You will not have time to “scramble.”

Instructions:

1. Choose a partner. There will be 5 pairs and 1 triple. Obviously it is preferable that BOTH of you be present on May 13. If you cannot be here make sure to partner with someone who can.

2. Plan a “game.” See me for examples of past games but be creative.

We will invite several classes to play the games. You should plan on at least 30 players.

3. State your purpose (population and parameter of interest), null and alternative hypotheses, and test. This is due by May 12.

4. On May 13, set up and run the Olympics. After cleaning up we will return to the classroom to begin the data analysis.

5. Prepare and present your results. Use the “toolbox” as a guide. Make a poster (no larger than 1/2 sheet of poster board) about your game and results.

6. The poster and write up is due by Friday, May 16. Your grade will be based upon quality of analysis, quality of presentation and quality of participation. This is a test grade.

Individual Project

The individual project is due by May 30. You have some flexibility here.

If you choose to present and analyze univariate data, you will follow the SOCS procedures.

If you choose to present and analyze bivariate data, you will follow the linear regression procedures.

If you choose to do a statistical test or observation, you will follow the toolbox procedures.

Your presentation should be on 8.5 by 11 paper and include the description of your project along with the statistical analysis. Your grade will be based on statistical accuracy, completeness, and quality of presentation.

This is a test grade.

The Debate

We will watch A Civil Action on May 12 and May 19. You will research the subject and debate the issues. Dan will lead this project. The debate will be on May 20 and will be formally judged.

This is a test grade. It will be based on quality and depth of research and quality of participation.
