NWSA SLT Minutes April 11, 2016
Attendees:
Meeting started at 8:00am
1. The school received a safety rating of 105 (Sears)
2. Middle School Students on 8th Grade field trip to the Outer Banks
3. There will be a visit to observe classes in regards to PBIS (Positive Behavior Initiative)
4. Testing to start May 26th (this was adjusted to May 25th since May 27th was forgiven as a make-up day and will be a teacher workday)
5. AP testing starts the first week of May
6. Field day is being considered for the middle school at the end of the year by principal and student advisory committee
7. The first meeting of the Northwest Foundation was held, Cynthia Conrow will be chair, Cheryl Smith will be secretary, and Robin Palmer will be treasurer. Plans are to meet with department chairs and booster clubs to recruit for the board of directors. In process of obtaining non-profit status, ongoing fundraising includes electronic form for sending in donations, buying seat naming privileges, tiered levels for giving, and gofundme.org. 8. Accreditation activities have been completed and CMS has received a top ranking, noting that parent and staff input into the school improvement plan was a plus.
9. Safety committee reported recommendation designate direction on stairwells between class periods, especially before and after lunch. Staff coverage in the courtyard between high school lunch periods still a concern.
10. To promote a positive environment (PBIS), we have thus far designated two pro-caring days, Health team has organized a Health Fair, student advisory committee to consider an art competition, and Earth Day activities are planned.
11. ELA 7th and 8th grade MAP scores and 6th grade math MAP scores are indicating students are on target to meet SIP targets.
12. In order to meet the greater than 95% graduation target, counselors are working with teachers to identify potential failures and recovery has already started before and after school and designated weekends.
13. Preliminary ACT scores are in and indicate that we will be surpassing the SIP target for passing which is defined by the state as a composite score of 17 or greater. The overall composite score also appears to be greater than last year’s composite score average.
14. Capital needs – a group of parents presented a list of capital needs that includes a new water heater for the B building, Also presented was the fact that $135K is used for rental space at the NC Music Factory, class time is shortened due to the bus ride over there and that consistent and timely transportation has also been an issue. Currently NWSA is 29th on the priority list. Bond request by CMS is expected for the 2016 ballot.
15. Building upgrades scheduled for the next two years starting with the auditorium renovations in May that will take through Aug 2017. Tech classes and equipment will be relocated to F100. Two additional classrooms to be turned into middle school science classroom will also be affected as well as upgrades done to the high school science classrooms next year.
16. 11th grade chrome books are in but covers have not been received. May not be distributed until cataloged and prepped.
17. Digitial conversion is still under discussion for use and distribution of chrome books next year. Right now they are assigned to core teachers and are designated for in-school use only.
