Terms and Conditions of Service
The terms and conditions applicable to this post are those of all NHS Employees.
1. Superannuation
You have the option to join the NHS Superannuation Scheme, to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme or to take out a Personal Pension.
Employee’s contributions to the NHS Scheme amount to 5.2% to 14.7% of salary (depending on rate of Pensionable Pay) and the employers’ contribution equates to 13.5% of salary. Employees in the NHS Scheme are “Contracted-out” of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and pay a lower rate of National Insurance contributions. Employees who choose to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme pay the higher rate of National Insurance contribution. A Stakeholder Pension is also available.

2. JOB PURPOSE
To work as a member of the Rehabilitation team and participate in seven day working to provide a professionally competent and equitable service. As an autonomous practitioners provide effective assessment, treatment and advice to patients, colleagues and other health care professionals.
In partnership with Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospitals may rotate to other specialities at various sites across the area.

· Managed, not supervised and responsible for own caseload
· Under direction of a Senior OT, responsible for the assessment and treatment of
primarily orthopaedic patients over two ward areas and pre admission clinic
· Frequent weekend work as specified in seven day working rotas
· Potential to rotate through other specialities across Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Hospitals
· No budgetary responsibilities except awareness of overall requirements
· Supervisory / delegation responsibility when working with the Rehabilitation Assistants
5. MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
· Potential rotation between GJNH and Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospitals to enable further experience in other specialty areas
· Assists with the ongoing development of the Occupational Therapy role in orthopaedics, as well as other specialist areas as required
· Liaising directly with other Healthcare Professionals regarding patient assessments, treatment and progress, both within and out with the hospital and dealing with daily issues relating to patient care
· Communicate with senior members of the team regarding daily running of service / problems as they arise or any changes to be considered for implementation to improve the overall service.
· To undertake any other appropriate duties as required by the Head of Rehabilitation / Lead Occupational Therapist
· Complete and maintain personal and clinical competencies within the specialty areas
· Involved in the induction of new staff and Bank Staff
· Maintain and process clinical records in accordance with both legal and departmental
requirements and complying with data protection
· Actively participate in the In-service programme as part of the Rehabilitation Team
· Maintain good working relationship with other Occupational Therapists in Boards nationally and keep up to date on developments in clinical practice
· Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of clinical standards and procedures in accordance with clinical governance initiatives, ensuring clinical effectiveness within the service under the direction of the Lead Occupational Therapist Clinical Specialist
· To continually promote the professional role of the Occupational Therapy within the MPT to maximise the effectiveness of the treatment for patients within the organisation and Boards nationally
· Comply with GJNH and departmental Health & Safety Policies and professional practice, to ensure safe delivery of healthcare to patients and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment
· Evaluate outcomes against set standards, audit and communicate with other healthcare professionals to achieve maximum recovery and facilitate expeditious and safe discharge in a cost-effective manner
· Responsible for Continuous Professional Development and a continuing high standard of clinical work taking into consideration evidence based practice
6. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
· Computer skills – record keeping and formatting standardised patient related letters
· Manually record patient information and electronically communicate this information to external agencies / Boards
· Maintain and ensure cleanliness and safety of equipment used with patient care e.g. aids to daily living and the occupational therapy assessment room.
· Maintain up-to-date information on adaptive equipment and legal implications regarding referrals and provision of equipment
· Complete personal timesheet and patient statistics as required by the line Manager
7. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
· Work with Physiotherapy colleagues and Rehabilitation Assistants to deliver individual treatment plans
· Assign daily activities to the Rehabilitation Assistants
· Assess, treat and organise / plan equipment and personal care as required for each patient for activities of daily living and take a proactive role in the discharge planning process, working closely with MPT members
· Responsible under “duty of care” for each patient until discharged home – i.e. ordering relevant equipment needs, following his/her professional assessment
· Anticipate problems delivering equipment depending on patients home or social circumstances or locality i.e. SWD criteria, which could affect timely discharge
· Communicate with multi-professional team decisions on patients’ discharge
8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
· Identify issues and problem solving as appropriate
· Demonstrate excellent communication skills in particular verbally and also written -communicating, motivating, teaching patients and relatives appropriate techniques for completing activities of daily living, for example in personal care tasks and essential transfers.
· Frequent conversations with Social Work Departments and other healthcare professionals in referring Boards – referring equipment or requesting follow-up assessments, communicating sensitive and confidential patient related information
· Liaise with Consultants and MPT members in patient care
· Participate and develop presentation and teaching skills as part of Continuous
Professional Development and In-service training
9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
· Frequent walking around the hospital, at times carrying equipment required to
assess / teach / demonstrate to patients
· Required to work in restricted space within patients’ rooms and using equipment
· Frequent kneeling, sitting and standing
· Computer skills and Moving and Handling skills required frequently – daily
· Manual dexterity skills demonstrated
· Frequent and prolonged telephone use
· The post holder is occasionally exposed to unpleasant working conditions during clinical duties. This could involve body fluids e.g. blood or vomit
10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
· Organising and communicating with Social Work Departments or Community Services, requesting equipment for patient discharge. This can be time consuming and frustrating. Community resources are often reduced in certain localities
· Promoting safe effective rehabilitation while enabling individuals to achieve their maximum level of independence in all activities of daily living
· Some patients are very frail / elderly with multiple pathology and impaired cognitive function requiring a higher level of care and provisions requiring psychological support, empathy and diplomacy
· Training on the computer system to link with the equipment store to facilitate the referring process
· Difficulties facilitating discharge when no Next of Kin (NOK) available
· On occasions reduced co-operation from NOK / family members regarding essential information required for access for equipment provision
11. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
· Degree / Diploma in Occupational Therapy
· Member of relevant professional body (College of Occupational Therapists) preferred
· HCPC (Health Profession Council)
· Computer literacy desirable
