Counselor’s Corner

LEAP and iLEAP testing is right around the corner. Here are some important dates to remember.

§  April 12-16, 2010 are the dates LEAP and iLEAP will be administered.

§  4th graders will also take part of the LEAP on March 23, 2010.

§  4th graders will take the LEAP – Louisiana Educational Assessment Program – which is a criterion referenced test designed to assess student performance according to state content standards and benchmarks in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Phase 1 of LEAP testing will take place March 23 and will cover skills in English Language Arts – Writing and Math criterion referenced items.

§  3rd, 5th, and 6th graders will take the iLEAP – Integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program – which is a norm-referenced and criterion referenced test designed to assess student achievement in multiple subjects – Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

TEST TAKING TIPS

1. Communicate to your child the importance of the

test and encourage your child to do his/her best.

2. Insist on an appropriate time for bed to ensure

proper rest.

3. Provide a good breakfast on a daily basis.

4. Try to make the morning of the test a pleasant one.

Avoiding excessive stress and pressure is important

for a positive testing experience.

5. Make every effort to have your child arrive at school

before the 8:10 a.m. bell. Make-up tests will be

difficult to schedule.

6. Tell your child to attempt to answer all of the

questions and not to leave any blank. Students

can get partial credit on the open-ended items.

7. Explain to your child the importance of using time

wisely. If your child gets stuck on a question,

encourage him/her to choose the best answer.

8. Remind your child to listen carefully to the

instructions from the teacher, and to read the

directions and each question carefully.

9. Encourage your child to stay focused on the test,

even if other students finish early.

10. Remind your child that it is okay to mark in the

test booklet as a help in taking the test –

example: underlining important words, etc. – but

to mark all answers on the answer sheet.

Counselor’s Week

February 1-5, 2010 was Counselor’s Week. We would like to recognize Mrs. Maxine Dartez, our school counselor for all of the hard work and effort she puts into Cecil Picard Elementary. Her kindness and thoughtfulness warm the hearts of our students, faculty, and every life she touches. We appreciate everything she does for our school.

Haiti Relief

The parents and students of Cecil Picard Elementary have once again proved to be the best. During our 100 Day Celebration, students were encouraged to donate 100 coins to assist the people of Haiti. We also had a jean day on February 1, 2010 for Haiti relief. C.P.E Jr. Beta Club donated $100. Those combined donations raised a total of $2048.25. Again, we thank you for your generosity.

Relay for Life

On February 2, we had a jean day and the proceeds for that fundraiser went to Relay for Life. We raised $346 for another great cause.

Coming Soon!!!

Brochures for the Cookie Dough Fundraiser will go home February 9th. The proceeds will help provide funds for instructional materials, operating expenses, motivational incentives for students, faculty and staff and other expenditures that are not funded through other sources. Get your Cookie Dough from a Cecil Picard student. Fundraiser will end on February 24th. Estimated delivery time will be March 25th.
