Training expectations

  1. Attend all training sessions on time and in full.
  2. Call Tamara at (916) 752-9652 or Lindsay at (530) 752-9651 if you will be late for training.
  3. Be prepared to actively participate in discussions and training exercises. Missed activities will need to be made up.

Core Competencies

Health Promotion

  • Identify at least three types of assessments that public health practitioners use to determine an intervention strategy
  • Explain the social ecological model and give an example of a HEP project that utilizes this model
  • Give examples of policy or environmental change strategies that can be implemented to change student behavior
  • Define Social Marketing and give an example of how it can be used
  • Explain the Stages of Change theoretical model and how it applies to at least one intervention in respective content area
  • Identify the levels of Spectrum of Prevention and be able to give examples of an intervention(s) used in the at least 4 of the levels
  • Understand how to engage campus and community partners in our health promotion efforts
  • Describe the difference between process and outcome evaluation. Give an example of each.

Health Education and Promotion

  • Describe HEP’s goals, values and standards for how work will be conducted
  • Understand the approval process for projects, budgets, marketing materials, etc.

Volunteer Management

  • Understand your management style add how it may impact your work with the volunteers
  • Be aware of the volunteer duties and planned schedule of volunteer tasks; strategize on how to manage volunteer workload
  • Understand your role in communicating with the volunteers and other staff
  • Describe how volunteer meetings are going to be planned and conducted
  • Identify how you are going to receive task requests, assign tasks to the volunteers and ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner
  • List methods for motivating and providing recognition to volunteers
  • Give examples of how to handle issues that may come up with the volunteers

Training Goals

  • Be prepared to facilitate your sections of the volunteer training
  • Have materials ready to get volunteers to sign up for fall welcome events (w/ Lindsay)
  • Be clear on your role in weekly volunteer and staff meeting
