This post will have direct access to children on a frequent basis (more than two times in any period of 30 days) or intensively (four days or more in one month or overnight), or will have responsibility for the day to day management of those with direct access to children on a frequent basis and is therefore classified as a Level 2 position. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced check or equivalent overseas police check will be obtained for employees at this level prior to their Start Date. As the post is covered by the Exceptions Order 1975 to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, any spent or unspent criminal convictions will be considered when considering suitability for the role.

To do so, we must raise our global media presence, building on Save the Children’s existing media resources across the world to deliver greater impact for children. We are looking for an exceptional candidate. You will have first-class editorial skills and judgement, and be used to working in an international environment - especially the developing world. The successful candidate will also have excellent leadership skills, possess a global media perspective, and of course share our values and mission to change the world to make it a better place for children.

Job Purpose:

To lead the development and management of a Global Media Unit for Save the Children. Working with 29 Save the Children members across the globe, our global centre Save the Children International (SCI) and our programme teams in the developing world, the Head of Global Media will help to position Save the Children as the world’s leading charity for children and significantly raise the profile of the agency’s work through greater media visibility. Leading a team in London, with responsibility for two media managers overseas, they will work closely with our global humanitarian and campaigns teams, senior media colleagues in Save the Children member organisations and in our programme countries.

Key accountabilities:

·  Develop and lead the Global Media Unit, including cementing processes and new ways of working between Save the Children member organisations, country programmes and SCI;

·  Responsible for overseeing the development of excellent, well produced global media products;

·  Lead the development and delivery of a global media strategy, across different media platforms;

·  Working with media officers around the globe and the SCI communications teams to generate and disseminate material to support different media markets;

·  Provide editorial leadership on global media stories, especially around major international and regional summits and humanitarian disasters including film and photography, being generated by the team, which can work and resonate with media across international and national markets;

·  Leading the delivery of excellent media materials and coverage around key international campaign moments and humanitarian disasters where Save the Children is responding;

·  Leading liaison with Save the Children member organisations, SCI teams and country programmes on mapping media opportunities across the world;

·  Leading co-ordination with Save the Children International (SCI) Advocacy, Campaigns and Humanitarian teams including regular face to face meetings to ensure plans are aligned for maximum impact and benefit for the organisation;

·  Oversee development of annual global media plan and calendar, in collaboration with the Global Media Steering Group, Global Campaigns and Advocacy, and Save the Children UK Chief Executive in his role as lead accountability, setting work-plans and KPIs;

·  Responsible for delivering agreed KPI targets for volume and impact of global media coverage;

·  Protect Save the Children’s reputation, developing and implementing crisis management media strategies as required;

·  Advise on budget requirements and operate within the budget available;

·  Carry out line management responsibilities for media officers, building a high-performing team & recruiting globally;

·  Be available for ‘out of hours’ on-call media work, with the ability to be on call over weekends, and deputising for the Director of Media when necessary. Travel overseas where this is required,

·  Ensure accountability and transparency to Save the Children members through the Global Media Steering Group.

Person specification:

·  Extensive senior operational experience leading a busy press office as a senior print or broadcast journalist, or equivalent professional media communications experience in an international environment

·  Experience of working on cross-organisational initiatives, involving campaign and fund-raising

·  objectives into media work

·  Good understanding of role of social media and its potential for global media impact;

·  Strong understanding of global media markets, different audiences, international media formats and influential outlets;

·  Excellent media contacts across global outlets including France 24, APTN, BBC World, CNN & Al Jazeera;

·  Excellent understanding of global issues, especially those relating to children, and the external environment (e.g. international & current debates) in which this field of work operates;

·  Strong ability to put in place new processes and see them operating effectively;

·  Ability to travel to developing world countries;

·  Commitment to Save the Children’s mission, values and approach.

Personal Skills:

·  Strong leadership qualities, including experience of managing and motivating a busy team in a fast moving, international environment

·  Excellent communicator with ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across different cultures, disciplines and time zones

·  Excellent English language writing skills, including the ability to summarise complex data and make it accessible to a variety of different markets and publications

·  Strong planning skills, including ability to set priorities, manageable work-plans and work within budgets

·  Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise when working under pressure on a number of projects

Professional Skills:

·  Excellent editorial judgement combined with a track record of obtaining media coverage across globally influential media such as CNN & Al Jazeera

·  Excellent knowledge, understanding and experience of social media & knowledge of latest social media trends relevant to journalists and media networks

·  Good knowledge of what makes an excellent international media product – such as an outstanding film and photo products, excellent op eds and press release

·  Excellent understanding of corporate communications

·  Excellent experience of news media management, including identifying issues which involve operational and reputational risk across different markets
