- Chemical receiving room is 118. All chemicals will be logged into the chemical inventory list and will be picked up in this room, unless otherwise arranged.
- Labeling will be done with permanent marker on chemical resistant label and will contain the chemical name, concentration, date made, hazard warnings, and name or initials of person responsible for transfer. See example below.
IV.List of chemicals used in this study and MSDS’s are attached. All chemicals must be inventoried as they arrive, and before they are used.
A Laboratory Safety Manual is located in the lab used for this project, Room ______, and in room 118. A Safety Policies and Procedures Manual is located in room 118.
- Floor plan for the lab used for this project is located in Laboratory Safety Manual, Room______.
- Ventilation systems to be used are available in Room ______. Before using the hood, it will be turned on and functioning properly. All pouring and mixing will be done in the hoods unless otherwise specified in this plan.
-All ventilation hoods will be inspected and maintained by a trained technician annually.
-Maintenance logs will be maintained for each hood with inspection and maintenance intervals.
-Handling equipment and materials will be done at least 6 inches inside the hood.
-In case of hood failure, call physical plant immediately and notify Lezlie Couch, 372-7163.
-Labsoak or equivalent will be used unless otherwise arranged by Lezlie Couch, 372-7163.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are required for each “Hazardous Material” listed. A separate SOP form should be completed for each chemical underlined in IV Section. Use the blank attached form to make as many copies as necessary. You may include the sample sheets if you have common flammable solvents or common corrosive chemical acids.
VIII. Include a brief overview of the study. Please include all experimental protocols.

(Example of exceptions- hydrofluric acid)
- HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL
For further information refer to the specific chemical MSDS. / May be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin; extremely destructive to tissue of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract, eyes and skin. Symptoms of exposure may include burning, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting.
- PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
/ Wear safety glasses, lab coat and protective gloves.
A face shield is recommended for personal protection in case of cleaning up concentrated spill quantities greater than 100 ml.
- ENGINEERING/
VENTILATION CONTROLS / Acids (except very diluted) should be dispensed only in a fume hood.
- SPECIAL HANDLING PROCEDURES AND STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
/ Mixing and dispensing should be done in a hood. All acids should be stored in a glass bottle over 1 liter should be transported in a spill proof carrier located in room 122. It should be stored in a corrosive storage cabinet separate from bases and solvents. Corrosive storage cabinets are located in rooms 122E and in 3746 A-4.
- SPILL AND ACCIDENT PROCEDURES
/ In case of contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with copious amount of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Evacuate individuals in area surrounding spill, prevent access to the spill area to prevent exposures and using fume hoods to prevent vapor build-up. Cover spill area with chemical spill neutralizer for acids in the spill center. In case of inhalation, remove from exposure area to fresh air immediately. Perform artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Keep person warm and at rest,
Get medical attention immediately. Call 911. In case of ingestion call 911. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.
- WASTE DISPOSAL
/ Place in appropriate container and label as “Dangerous Waste”. List the contents, concentrations, hazards associated with the material. Put in a Satellite Waste Area. Provide Lezlie with the appropriate hazardous waste paperwork.
- SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR ANIMAL USE
/ None
Standard Operating Procedures for Hazardous Chemicals
- PROCESS
/ Laboratory use of flammable solvents including: Acetone, Ethanol, Hexane
- HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL
/ Typically, flammable solvents have an effect on the central nervous system and at high concentrations can cause nervous system and at high concentrations can cause sedation, coma, and death. Contact with solvents can also defat skin and cause irritation of eyes, skin, and mucous membranes.
- PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
/ Wear safety glasses, lab coat and protective nitride gloves. Do not reuse gloves.
- ENGINEERING/
VENTILATION CONTROLS / Solvents should be dispensed and used only in a fume hood.
- SPECIAL HANDLING PROCEDURES AND STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
/ Mixing and dispensing should be done in a hood with all sources of ignition eliminated (hot plate, burners, etc.) Solvent stored in glass bottle over one Liter should be transported in spill proof carriers. Solvent should be stored in a flammable storage cabinet separate from acids, bases and oxidizers. Flammable storage cabinets are located in rooms 122, 116, and 3746- A4.
- SPILL AND ACCIDENT PROCEDURES
/ Remove all sources of ignition from the spill area. Evacuate individuals in the area surrounding spill, prevent access to the spill area to prevent exposures and using fume hoods to prevent vapor build-up. Wipe down spill area with solvent absorbent pads in the spill center, wash with soap and water. In case of inhalation, remove form exposure area to fresh air immediately. Perform artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Keep person warm and at rest, get medical attention immediately. Call 911.
- WASTE DISPOSAL
/ Place in appropriate container and label as “Dangerous Waste” and list the contents, concentration, and hazards associated with the material. Put in appropriate satellite waste area and give waste paperwork to Lezlie Couch.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR ANIMAL USE / None
