A Brief History

Ye Olde Centerton Inn has long been a welcome way station, serving the weary traveler since 1706. A notable landmark, the Inn is the oldest operating Inn in New Jersey, as well as the second oldest operating Inn in America! The rich tradition of the Inn reflects the very history of our nation. The customs officers of King William and Queen Mary utilized the Inn as an inventory station to enforce the “Navigation Acts,” and the Centerton Inn served as a vital link between Philadelphia and GreatEggHarbor.

The General Marquis de Lafayette is said to have planned Revolutionary War strategy here, and General “Mad” Anthony Wayne visited the Inn on food foraging expeditions for Washington’s troops at Valley Forge.

The Inn was used for casting votes in the 1824 Presidential Election between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and again during the Election of 1828. During the mid 1800’s the Centerton Inn became an important mail stop, as it was located at the crossroads of two well travelled stagecoach lines. One line ran from Greenwich to the Ferry Crossing below Philadelphia; the other ran from shore points to Tuckahoe, to Port Elizabeth, Millville, Bridgeton, and onto the Inn.

Relax and enjoy our Lounge and Dining Rooms. Each of our six rooms has its own personality, warmth and appeal. We appreciate your visit and strive daily to surpass your highest expectations!
