"Advancing Bio-Technologies in Alberta"
Friday, March 16, 2012
Chateau Louis Conference Centre, 11727 Kingsway Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta
In partnership with Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, the Canadian Institute of Forestry, Rocky Mountain Section has developed a Technical Session entitled 'Advancing Biotechnologies in Alberta'.
This Technical Session will examine technologies used in the conversion of forest biomass to develop higher value products. The technologies have positive implications for reducing green house gases, utilization of residual waste streams using forest biomass, improving business opportunities for the forest sector and improving the rates of return for companies through developing business to business relationships with new biotechnology companies.
The presentations and discussions will explore the latest developments in existing and new biotechnologies in the pre-commercial and commercial conversion of biomass. Topics to be discussed include:
· ongoing work in Alberta Innovates to advance the bioeconomy
· examples of business to business relationships between the Biorefining Conversions Network at the University of Alberta
· new opportunities in the pulp and paper operations
· value of the Alberta Biomaterials Development Center to the forest sector in advancing biocomposites and biomaterials products
· the latest updates on Gasification technologies to make biofuels and other value added streams
· bio-carbon/biochar opportunities
· the latest update on the current Nano Crystalline Cellulose program and advancements in Alberta
