St. Emily XC Ends Successful Season with 3rd Place Finish at State
The St. Emily School Boys and Girls Cross Country Team from Mount Prospect tteams took first place at their Sectional meet at Busse Woods on October 11th. This is the 3rd year in a row that both teams have qualified for the state meet. On Saturday, October 18th in Maxwell Park in Bloomington, the girls team placed 3rd in state in the Class 1A division. Top runners for the school were: Joy Bergstrom, 26th (12:42) Aubrey Hasley 28th (12:45), Sarah Magnoni 38th (12:59), Annie Gaughan 61st (13:20), Gabriella Piagari, 69th (13:25). Other team members were Sophie Dominguez, Julia Nowak , Julianna Carusiello and Kara Dempsey. The boys team placed 16th. Patric Natindim medaled at the state meet in 23rd place with a time of 11:32. Other key runners on the team were: Kevin Igoe, Scott Rogowski, Tommy Cortese, Lucas Geiger, Nick Cortese and Justin Fernandez. The alternates were Jason Bergstrom, Nate Tehrani, and Gerard Pena. The girls placing 3rd was the best showing for any St. Emily team. Previous boys teams have placed 4th.
The girls team has had an impressive season. They came in first place in all of their conference meets, and also took first at the conference finals. The top 5 runners at conference finished in the top 20, with Aubrey Hasley 1st, Joy Bergstrom 4th, Sarah Magnoni 5th, Gabriella Piagari 14th and Annie Gaughan 18th. The girls also took first at the Resurrection Invite in Chicago, Notre Dame in Niles, and 4th at the St. Pete Invite. This invite draws schools from the entire Chicagoland area, and many schools are in the 3A division for state
At the varsity boys conference, 3 of the St. Emily boys placed in the top 20. Patric Natindim 2nd, Scott Rogowski 14th and Kevin Igoe 18th. The boys finished 3rd in the conference.
On the JV team, Shannon Walsh finished 2nd at conference with at 6:36 in her mile. Nick Cortese finished in the top 20 for the boys and Kevin Slawacki had a strong performance at 25th.
St. Emily School cross country team is comprised of 4th – 8th graders, and is coached by Lori Magnoni, Terri Cortese, Lucy Bergstrom, and Amber Ellerson. The program has a long tradition of building solid character, sportsmanship, teamwork and dedication. In the past 14 seasons the school has been represented at the state meet each year and 11 of the 15 years has had at least one team run at the state meet.
