“Samantha …it’s time to leave,” her mom called from the kitchen.

“I’ll be right down,” she said as she hurriedly combed through her long hair. She was so excited about their visit to the harbor today. Sam had earned the role of the princess in the play, “The Princess and the Pea:” a story of a young prince who could only marry a true princess. His mother, the queen, insisted that a true princess would feel a tiny pea beneath several mattresses while she slept. Sam was unsure if she had the courage to play the part until she went for her audition. When she got onstage to speak, a sudden feeling of happiness eased her nerves and she delivered her words with excitement.

Today, her mother was taking her into town to pick out a costume. She already had imagined what her gown would look like. She hoped to find a special one that was fit for a true princess. A gown that would sparkle in the stage lights …yes, that is what I want, she thought. Her mom said she would allow Samantha to pick out her own costume. Sam was so excited. She couldn’t wait to get to town. They traveled along their regular course. It was a small path that led them to the beginning of the harbor market. There they would find many booths along the bay where peddlers traveled from far away to bring and sell their custom made wares. When she came to the first booth, she saw a gown that might do the trick. But, there was no harm in looking further, so she moved to the next booth. That’s when she saw it. A gown that glistened in the morning rays of the sun. It sparkled with all the colors of the rainbow, and she knew it was the one. She smiled as her mom paid for her gown. Her mom also bought her shoes to match her new dress.

“Mom, how will I ever be able to wait for the night of the play with this hanging in my closet?” Sam questioned.

“You may want to leave it at school,” her mom said with a giggle.
