SEESOIL meeting:#FarmSoil – discussion meeting for farmers and researchers

This meeting is an informal forum to bring together farmers and researchers to exchange ideas, research and practices on soil management in agricultural systems. The meeting is hosted by Julian Gold Farm Manager at the Hendred FarmPartnership. The meeting will kick-off witha farm visit to discuss current trials and experiences. The rest of the day will involve interactive discussions(no powerpoint!) based on farmer experiences and results from on-farm trials linked to current academic research in soil management. The group discussions and activities will focus on two aspects of soil management: soil carbon and nutrient management.Everyone welcome to contribute to the discussions.

09:15-09:30 / Arrival and registration. Tea and coffee
09:45-11:45 / Farm tour – depart from Farmyard
To Include ASSIST trials and Agroforestry discussion at possible future trial site
12:00-13:30 / Soil carbon – interactive group discussions
  • Practical farm management techniques for carbon sequestration in soils
  • C inputs into soils – pros and cons of types and sources
  • Co-design a decision support tool for farmers to balance carbon sequestration with profitable crop production

13:30-14:00 / Lunch (provided)
14:00-15:30 / Soil nutrients– interactive group discussions
  • Is detailed soil nutrient testing essential for efficient crop productionor a waste of management time?
  • Is standard P and K testing sufficient or is there merit in more detailed analysis such as Albrecht system?
  • What are the outcomes of variable fertiliser application techniques (especially Nitrogen)?

15:30 / Depart

The event is free to BSSS members and £15 for non-members (to cover the cost of lunch and refreshments). Tea/coffee will be provided at registration.
